First it looks like you might have a bad install of the Microsoft Antispyware tool or it could have been corrupted with the malware infestation, could you please go to start.control panel> add/remove programs and uninstall it. you can re-install it after the fix is complete.

Next,
Click Here to download TheKillbox. Extract TheKillBox.exe from the zip file and double click it to open it up. In the 'Enter Full Path and Filename to Delete' box, copy and paste these entries one by one, clicking 'Find and Kill This File' after each one:

Click 'Exit' when done.

Note: If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run: http://www.javacools...ngfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.


Next, Please look over the Following Entries I have listed, run Hijack This again and check them and then, making sure you have No Internet Explorer Windows open, including this one, Press the "Fix Checked" Button with HijackThis.

To Delete These Files/Folders, You Will need to Boot into Safe Mode. This can be done by tapping F8 while your machine restarts.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - I was away for a couple of days.

I've tried to do what you asked, although there's a couple of things I'm not quite sure about.

You talk about a bad install of the Microsoft Antispyware tool - I have no memory of downloading this, and there's nothing on the "Add/Remove program" feature. I did download Windows XP Service Pack 2 a few weeks ago. Would this be what you're referring to?

I've deleted the files you listed, although two of them:

refuse to be deleted via hijackthis. I tried re-booting in safe mode, but they don't actually show up at all in safe mode! So I'm curious as to my next step. Here's the Hijackthis log and the Findit log, anyway.

click on start>search
choose all files and folders.
click on advance and choose to check hidden and system files/folders.

then type this in the top box kmd*.htm delete all files that it shows with that search.


You have a Horseserver infection which requires some tools to get rid of.

• First, download HSFix from here
• After it is downloaded, create a new folder on your desktop called "HSFix" and extract all the files into the newly created folder.
• Next, download CleanUp! Install it, but do not run it yet.
• Boot into safe mode: Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
• Locate the HSFix folder on your desktop, open it, and double-click "hsfix.bat"
• A log will be produced which you can close out of.
• Then run HijackThis again, close any open windows and browsers and fix these:

• Run CleanUp! and let it clean your computer of temp files. Decline when it asks you to log off.
• Restart your computer into normal mode and run at least one of the following free, online virus scans:

  http://www3.ca.com/t...sinfo/scan.aspx
• Restart your computer one last time and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the HSFix log which is located at C:/hslog.txt, also add a new finti log.

I had trouble locating kmd~1.htm, and couldn't locate it through a straightforward search. The findit log confirmed that it was still there, so I took the liberty of deleting it using killbox.

The other files appear to have gone now, as the logs should bear out. I did a scan on http://housecall.trendmicro.com.start corp.asp and deleted 17 trojans.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox .

Many thanks for all your help - I feel I've learned quite a bit about my computer in the past couple of weeks (on a very steep curve!) I'll follow up your advice about the spywareblaster, and give some thought to the firefox installation.

When the problem first occurred, I was looking through a lot of different sites to try to find some clues as to how to rectify the problem, but this site is easily the best - properly organized with sound advice from people who know what they're doing. Keep up the good fight!
