After the infection, I ran this spyware removal software called xoftspy I purchased a few days ago online. (I hope this software is the real thing and not like the stinking iGuard software that magically loaded itself on my machine.) It identified several files and I deleted and quarantined them.
I then ran the McAfee virus scanner.
It quarantined some malicious program, which I deleted, and identified a "pup" (whatever that is...) in a file called boot.exe. I tried to delete boot.exe and clean boot.exe and the software would not let me delete it and it said it could not be cleaned. I gather this is a system file I should not mess with.
Then I searched online for smitfraud.c and saw your site postings on this nasty thing. I uninstalled iGuard immediatly and deleted the wp.bmp from the c:\ directory. Now I have a nice black wallpaper!
One thing I noticed right away after the infection is that Internet Explorer redirects itself to Qfind.net and says I have spyware called stealthSWs114.h!dll on port #33299 and absolutly must buy one of their software solutions to fix my problem. I would like to qfind them and....
Needless to say I thought xoftspy and McAfee would intercept this stuff. It really sucks that using the internet has come to this.
I read one posting that said to uninstall virtual maid so I did that. That got rid of a majic toolbar in Internet Explorer that had links to some online dataing service and iGuard.
As someone else recommended, I modified the folders to show hidden files, then ran hijackthis. Here is the results of the scan:

After running hijackthis, I saw all the references to Qfind, but was afraid to go any further deleting stuff on my own. I don't know much about the registry and would hate to damage my machine any worse, since I don't have a very recent backup of my hard drive. Lesson learned!
I haven't tried to run many programs since my infection, and was very happy to see that Outlook worked so I could mail you a posting.
(One program that is not working right is DiskKeeper. When I tried to analyze my hard drive it stopped and gave me some error message I forgot to write down.)
I also read that you can restore XP to an earlier date and it will fix everyting. I presume this would require a backup of xp that I foolishly don't have.
Please help if you can...
P.S.
I imagine Dell is spying on me too, since I am not even the adminstrator of my own machine. This is a sad state of affairs. Would I need to re-format and install all the software to make myself the admin of my own machine?
I do have a data backup that is a few months old, but I would really hate to have to start over with my XPS.
