There's a few things happening and I don't know if they're related or not! Firstly the <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=computer&v=56">computer</a> is really slow to boot up. When I'm on the <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=internet&v=56">internet</a> I can't access most <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=web&v=56">web</a> pages (even if they're safe). It says the page cannot be found and then a window pops up saying ActiveX reports that there is no <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=security&v=56">security</a> and asks if I want to proceed. When I click yes the <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=web&v=56">web</a> page is just a blank white screen. I've tried deleting an ActiveX folder from my <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=computer&v=56">computer</a> (it's stored within <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=Adobe&v=56">Adobe</a> Acrobat folder) but it says I am unable to delete it.
The <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=computer&v=56">computer</a> also doesn't recognise either the CD-ROM or CD-RW drives. They are not detected in My <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=Computer&v=56">Computer</a> or <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=Printers&v=56">Printers</a> and Other <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=Hardware&v=56">Hardware</a>.

I've tried <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=Norton&v=56">Norton</a> <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=Anti-virus&v=56">Anti-virus</a> scans and Sbybot-Search and Destroy and they say there's no problem!

Here's a hijackthis report if it helps: (Eh by the way: Why the [bleep] is it showing up NastySex?! I searched my <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=computer&v=56">computer</a> and can't find the program!)
I'd appreciate any help or advice! Cheers!

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

It doesn't appear you have any antivirus software installed. We recommend AVG's free version: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php

Thanks very much! I scanned my computer and found lots of trojans!!! They're all deleted now and I've intalled the antivirus software. There's seems to be a big difference in speed and I can access all the websites. Do you think the virus's are responsible for me 'losing' the CDROM and CD-RW drives?

Ya probably, how about posting a new fresh log and we'll fine tune it and get you all set up.

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Click here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...p1/default.mspx
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Some hijacks interfere with the installation of Service Pack 2, so we'll hold of for now. When we're finished cleaning your computer we highly recommend installing SP2. Click here: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.
-or-
It's a very large download, so if you're on dial-up, order a free CD here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...default810.mspx

The updates are not being shown as being installed. You might try again.

Here is a link to directly download Service Pack 1a from Microsoft.

Sorry it's taken so long to get back but I've had trouble downloading the pack (especially with a 56K modem!). I couldn't download Service pack 1a as apparantly I already had it but I think it didn't install properly so I downloaded Service Pack 2. Here's the new Hijack log.
Once again, thanks for the help!

Let's start with a couple of free programs:
CWShredder is the first to run. Here's why: If a CoolWebSearch variant is indeed running on your system, it may actually prevent you from running spyware scans. It is smart enough to detect efforts to detect it, and stop them. Download CWShredder to your desktop or other location. Close all browser windows, double click the CWShredder icon to run, then click the Fix -> button. When finished, reboot and run Spybot Search & Destroy.

Spybot Search & Destroy Download and install. Start Spybot S&D using the "Spybot-S&D (easy mode)" link from your Start menu . Click the Search for updates button, if any are found then click the Download Updates button. After all updates are downloaded, click the Check for problems button. When the scan is complete, place a check next to anything marked in red, then click the Fix selected problems button. You may need to run Spybot S&D multiple times to remove all infections.

When finished, Reboot your computer. Finally, reply to this post with a new HiJackThis log so we can look for any nasties that may have been missed. thumbsup.gif

CLICK HERE to download Spybot S&D

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked. They all might not be here anymore after the scans. Just remove what is still in the log.
