I ran Kaspersky, which found remanants of an old email virus (which I have not been able to locate and doesn't seem to be active) but nothing else. Good to go, right? That night, when AVG (anti-virus) ran, it picked up a few files, which it labeled as BHO.BIE trojans. I told it to Heal. Rebooted. AVG is now warning me about those same files approximately every minute. I've tried Heal and Quarantine to no avail. After repeatedly clicking Ignore for about an hour, I just closed AVG until I can get the system clean. I went through the recommended steps in the You Must Read This post. The final scan from ActiveScan still shows several adware items (although it appears to have fixed the trojans), so here I am. I also ran VundoFix for good measure. It didn't find anything. This site has been a great help in the past, just by reading some of the other posts. Thanks for your help with this problem. -Setec (Going back, it appears that I didn't get to save the logfile from AVG Anti-Spyware after I told it to fix the stuff it found. If needed, I can re-run it.) ------------------------------------------------------------- Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 10:05:17 PM, on 10/3/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\RunDll32.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\PELMICED.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTHELPER.EXE C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exe C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\mainserv.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\AAWTray.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\bittorrent.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\CLI.exe C:\Program Files\Palm\Hotsync.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqgalry.exe C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\apcsystray.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12.exe C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe O2 - BHO: myBar BHO - {0494D0D1-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL (file missing) O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\ssv.dll O2 - BHO: Discover deskshop Browser Helper Object - {8DB3D69D-DA5E-4165-B781-72A761790672} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\BhoDshop.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D962C255-D8C0-4D52-8B03-93F17D917624} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dplayxk.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EF0B85D8-FBEC-4259-829C-B3AC1DE6F8A4} - c:\windows\system32\apcupss.dll O3 - Toolbar: My &Search Bar - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL (file missing) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATICCC] "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe" runtime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Mouse Suite 98 Daemon] PELMICED.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINDVDPatch] CTHELPER.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Jet Detection] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\PROGRAM\ADGJDet.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exe /STARTUP O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SecureOnlineAccountNumbers] C:\Program Files\Secure Online Account Numbers\SOAN.exe /dontopenmycards O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AAWTray] C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\AAWTray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BitTorrent] "C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\bittorrent.exe" --force_start_minimized O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe O4 - Global Startup: APC UPS Status.lnk = ? Hi Setec,
Welcome to the site I will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up. Please give me some time to look it over and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I want you to show hidden files. There are instructions HERE to help you do this. You should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Some of the instructions I give may need to be printed or saved for reference during the fix. Some of the fix will be done in safe mode so you will be unable to access this thread at that time. These instuctions should be read first, then followed. If you do not understand something, don't be afraid to ask, or see if I'm on chat. This post has been edited by sarahw: Oct 5 2007, 01:53 AM |

Before we begin this fix, can you please save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for reference. Some of this fix will be done in Safe mode, where you will not be able to access this thread on the internet. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
Please let me know of any problems you may have encountered or questions you want to ask. |

I want to confirm that it's necessary to uninstall Bittorrent. I installed this program and do use it. If so, just let me know, but I wanted to double-check before removing it.
Other than that, I followed the instructions. It seems that I posted an old (by about 45 minutes) HijackThis log to the post. 2 of the 3 items you wanted me to remove had already been removed (by ActiveScan, I think). VundoFix still didn't find any problems. I didn't find any programs in the uninstall list that I didn't put there. The virus warnings still persist from AVG. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 7:18:18 PM, on 10/4/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\mainserv.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wdfmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\alg.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\PELMICED.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTHELPER.EXE C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\AAWTray.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\CLI.exe C:\Program Files\Palm\Hotsync.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\apcsystray.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqgalry.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\ssv.dll O2 - BHO: Discover deskshop Browser Helper Object - {8DB3D69D-DA5E-4165-B781-72A761790672} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\BhoDshop.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D962C255-D8C0-4D52-8B03-93F17D917624} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dplayxk.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EF0B85D8-FBEC-4259-829C-B3AC1DE6F8A4} - c:\windows\system32\apcupss.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATICCC] "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe" runtime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Mouse Suite 98 Daemon] PELMICED.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINDVDPatch] CTHELPER.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Jet Detection] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\PROGRAM\ADGJDet.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exe /STARTUP O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SecureOnlineAccountNumbers] C:\Program Files\Secure Online Account Numbers\SOAN.exe /dontopenmycards O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AAWTray] C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\AAWTray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BitTorrent] "C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\bittorrent.exe" --force_start_minimized O4 - Global Startup: APC UPS Status.lnk = ? Hi,
It is neccessary to uninstall Bit Torrent as that is a likely source of infection for most users. These Vundofix instructions are a little bit different than last time: Updating Java and Clearing Cache

I followed the instructions, after first uninstalling Bittorrent from safe mode.
It appears that the infection is still there. I also still see the 2 files in the Hijack This log. On reviewing the VundoFix log, it still shows the recommendation to remove all old versions of Java. Should I go in and uninstall all of the old versions? ------------------------------------------------------ VundoFix V6.5.9 Checking Java version...
