I keep getting notices that Norton Antivirus has detected the Trojan.Vundo virus in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll file, however Norton cannot delete it or quarantine it. I downloaded the Vundo fix tool from the Norton site but that does not work. I also have Microsoft Antispyware and Spybot Search and Destroy on my system, but nothing will remove this virus.

As a result, the computer is running very, very slow and I get continuous notices that Norton has found the virus in that file. Below is the HijackThis logfile. I notice that a lot of the posts are for the Vundo virus, but no one seems to have it located in the same location as I do, the gebcc.dll file, so I'm not sure what to do.

Also, I checked under the Process Manager in Hijack This and my C:\Windows\system32\winlogon.exe process is using the gebcc.dll. I would really appreciate any help, as it is near impossible to use my computer as is!

Welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download VundoFix.exe at http://www.atribune....ds/VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key (or F5 in some machines) until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll

* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\ccbeg.*
* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
* In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00DBDAC8-4691-4797-8E6A-7C6AB89BC441} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddcyv - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebcc - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqro - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ssqro.dll

Delete these if found:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\orqss - delete any files that begin with orqss

* After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
* Pressing any key will cause a 'Blue Screen of Death' this is normal, do not worry!
* Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp! http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click 'Options...'
Move the arrow down to 'Custom CleanUp!'
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run an online virus scan at ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Thank you so much for your quick reply! I followed your instructions, and everything seemed to work until the forced reboot. The blue screen appeared, and then I got a message reading "STOP: C000021a Fatal System Error. Windows Logon Process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000001 System has shut down. I manually rebooted the computer, and everything seemed to work ok however.

I ran CleanUp! and then ran the Panda Active Scan. Here are the results from the Active Scan:

Adware:adware/gator No disinfected Windows Registry
Adware:Adware/StartPage.AIW No disinfected C:\HJT\backups\backup-20051009-152457-439.dll
Adware:Adware/StartPage.AIW No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll

I'm no longer getting the notices for the Trojan.Vundo virus, but do I need to remove what was found by the Panda Active Scan?

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

MyWay

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\HJT\backups\backup-20051009-152457-439.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\

Restart. No need for a new log. If you want, run another Panda scan to see if anything else is found. Ignore the registry entry that's found there, it's harmless. Aside from that, if nothing else is found, then:

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

I followed all of these instructions and ran a Panda ActiveScan just to be sure, and nothing was found. Everything else seems to be running fine. Thank you so much for all of your help-especially for responding so quickly! I really appreciate it.
