Hello, I'm new and i have a desprate problem.

I was playing a game, and norton antivirus poped up and said something like a virus that couldn't be removed.

I noticed my desktop screen was all blue, and in grey text it said it in like this format"
Security warning
A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:C001E36 in VXD VMM<01> +
00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

* System can not function in normal mode.
Please check you security settings. (yes it said you not your)
* Scan your PC with any available antivirus / spyware remover program to fix this problem.

This text was repeated, and that and to change it (i tried) i went to properties and noticed that i couldn't change backround. Just "screensavors", and "Advanced".
I have my specs in my profile, but if you need more, tell me, and tell me how to get it for you. There seems to be no serious effects besides the backround...i can still load programs.

P.S. I've checked other topics on this, but they had a DELL and had different effects. Please help me out!

I just restarted the comp, and there is no backround change and everything seems normal....THe only thing is nortun pops up ever like 10 seconds saying "Bloodhound" or something (and its located in the system 32 folder.

Ok heres the latest: After three days, i left the comp on, and a popup came up and said "you have spyware, download this" or w/e and i said "leave my computer undetected" which was there x out option.

Then i noticed the backround changed, to a blue screen with a black box in the middle saying: "System Stopped"
System has been stopped due to a seriousl malfunction. Spyware activity has been detected.

It is recommended to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer before all spyware removed."

I scanned and noticed that somethign couldn't be deleted... It was C:Program Files:istsvc/istvce.exe (almost exactly that or something). What do i do?

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

I noticed that your HiJackthis.exe is located on your desktop, make sure to save HijackThis in its own folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This is very important, so HiJackThis can save backups!

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please RIGHT-CLICK: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid
Viewpoint
ISTbar

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.

Download SSFix.exe from http://www.atribune.org/downloads/SSFix.exe

1. Run it to extract the SSFix folder to your desktop.

2. Go to start, controlpanel, Add or Remove Programs and uninstall SpySheriff

3. Close all windows then open the SSFix folder on your desktop.

4. Double click on ss.bat (the program with the gear icon)

5. Allow it to run. When it is finished it will reboot your computer.

6. After rebooting please post a new HijackThis log. Let us know how the computer is working.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Daily Weather Forecast] C:\Program Files\Daily Weather Forecast\weather.exe

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Daily Weather Forecast

9. Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Program Files\Daily Weather Forecast
C:\Documents and Settings\Garrett\Favorites\Fun & Games

10. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\msxct1.ini
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\YSBactivex.???
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wp.bmp
