Unable to re-install MSN Messenger on Vista

Hi all!

I'm currently trying to re-install MSN on to a Vista machine, but everytime I try to download anything of the ilk, I get either the message "You have a newer version on your pc" or "MSN is already installed".

I have so far tried to de-install the program (I can't find it in the "Remove programs" anymore), delete folders, both MSN and MSN live in addition to deleting as many keys as possible. So now I've run out of ideas...

Oh, I have problems uninstalling the Kiwee Toolbar that shows in my "Remove programs", is this perhaps somehow related?

I would really appreciate a little help on this, as I feel a little silly...

Best regards,

Verd

Most likely, you have some registry leftovers.

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save As, and save AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Open Autoruns, click on Logon tab.
Line 25:
msnmsgrstart File not found: C:\Users\Tph\Messengerstart.exe
Right click on it, click Delete.

Restart computer, and try installation again.

I was hopeful, but this didn't solve it, I'm afraid... It still says "MSN already installed" when I try to install it.

Open Autoruns again.
Line 50:
msnim File not found: C:\PROGRA~1\WI1F86~1\MESSEN~1\MSGRAP~1.DLL
Right click, delete.

Open Windows Explorer, and delete Messenger folder from C:\PROGRAM FILES\WI1F86_whatever folder starts with "WI1F86"

Restart.

I'm terribly sorry, but it is still not working...

I really appreciate your help, though.

Get Windows Installer CleanUp Utility: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us
Look for MSN Messenger entries.

I try to run the msicuu2.exe file, and it comes up with an error about VBScript run time error. I have also tried to run it as an administrator, but to no avail. However, the error code is then Can't find the file, code 80070002.

The error states:

Windows Script Host
Skript:
C:\Users\Tph\ppData\Local\Temp\IXP000.TMP\StartMsi.vbs
Line: 17
Character: 1
Error: No access
Code: 800A0046
Source: Microsoft VBScript run time error

And for the administrator-attempt:

C:\Users\Tph\ppData\Local\Temp\IXP000.TMP\StartMsi.vbs
Line: 21
Character: 1
Error: The system cannot find the file
Code: 80070002
Source: (null)

My apologies, the errors come up in Norwegian, hence the translation.
