Unknown XP Problem

In reference to (which I need to update after posting HiJack This Log):

Current Problems Which Remain:
1) hourglass incessantly flashes on/off next to cursor
2) click desktop items launch certain programs >> launches Windows Installer "preparing to install" dialog >> then some "program install"
3) startup slow (long time disk activity light after desktop appears)
4) slow shutdown - will not turn off after "windows is shutting down"

(CNTL-ALT-DEL problems seems fixed)

Ran Avast, MBAM and "Stinger" Full Scans last night >> No problems detected

I've done all ATF-cleaner, Advanced System Care tweaks already, have Restore Point and Registry backups now. Also used JV16 registry tweeks.
