A little bit of history before I post the log, and maybe some questions. These questions don't need to be answered, but I'm asking them for my mom's sanity's sake, as well as mine.

Almost two weeks ago, mom purchased a Sony Vaio notebook. I think it may have been quite soon after setup, but I am not sure, that it started having problems. It will freeze, though the mouse still works. So, everything basically becomes unclickable. Ctrl+Alt=Del does pop up, but nothing can be clicked. The only solution is to restart, and at the opening screen press F8 and choose the option.. I can't remember the exact wording but I think it says something about bypassing the restore, or deleting the restore points. But that's the only way to get it working again. It's random, we haven't found what triggers it. That is only a minor problem, as we would really like to return this to Best Buy. That's where the next problem comes in.

When it was taken back to Best Buy, the GeekSquad employee informed us that it had a trojan. As well as this w32.Looked.P worm thing. After a great deal of condescending on his part, he said the only way we would be able to return it is to remove the viruses(he also mentioned that, despite there being many pages about Vaios and how they freeze that those people must be lying and we are, too. He said the freezing thing is caused by the trojan, and not by the vaio, despite the fact that it has been freezing for a week, and the trojan was apparently quarantined on the 23rd, though we just found out about it today). I think I managed to get rid of the trojan, but I do need some help with the other most definitely. I have a feeling we won't be able to return this, since the chance to do so expires on Sunday, so that's why I ask about the freezing problem. If that can't be fixed, that's alright. I'm hoping we will be able to remove the virus in time, so if that's all that can be done, that will be fine. Thank you all so very much in advance.

The trojan you have is capable of stealing passwords. It may be a good idea to change any passwords you have especially if you do any banking on the machine.

Please run a scan with HijackThis and check the following lines for removal:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Systems32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinServer.exe

Now close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.


Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

• Save it to your desktop.
• Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
• Select:
  • Delete on Reboot
  • then Click on the All Files button.
• Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
  
  C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinServer.exe
  
  
  
• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  
• Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

After the reboot

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

• Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
• A new window will open...click the Check Now button
• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a new hijackthis log.

  • then Click on the All Files button.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Is the computer behaving any better now?

I did get a notification this time, it said "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!"

The computer hasn't frozen up yet, but then again I have only used this computer once previously, so I am not personally familiar with its habits.
