Everything seems to be running much better, although as I said Pandascan still says norton antivrus is disabled. Is this due to one of the many infections my machine had and is there a way to fix it that you know of? Or am I best to uninstall it and use another product entirely?

You might be better off using another anti-virus software. If you are prepared to spend some money on it, then might I recommend NOD32 by ESET.

If you'd rather go for free anti-virus clients, then there are of course AVG or Anti-Vir or avast!.

These are much more lighter than Norton afterall. Of course, if you have a paid subscription for Norton and it's still available, you can continue using it -- just remember to update.

As for the windows security updates -- yes, just use www.windowsupdate.com. Should do.

ARRGGGHH! Just ran hijack this to see if I could see the 'neededware' thing - it had a website with that addres listed as 'trusted zone'so I got rid of it, but svhost.exe is back!
There's also an entry for nvsvc32.exe, but not sure if this is a genuine thing this time?

Are you sure your Norton is updated?

Right-click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".

Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.

Uncheck both of those boxes.

Now please run a scan with HijackThis and check the following objects for removal:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft AutoUpdater] svhost.exe

Then close ALL windows but HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis & reboot.

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Comodo BOCLEAN <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known adsites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have. (Note to only use 1 at-the-time)
• Firewall <= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Kerio Personal Firewall and ZoneLabs. (Note to only use 1 at-the-time)
• More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.

Am I clean yet?

Yes norton is updated and I can see it running in the corner, but its obviously not working! I installed a trial version of AVG antispyware - is this the program you mean? when I clicked on the link I could only see trial versions or full versions you have to pay for - I'm probably being really dumb so please point me in the right direction!!

The entry is still there. Something blocked the HijackThis fix.

And no, I haven't recommended AVG Anti-Spyware. AVG Anti-Virus is a good anti-virus client though, but you should definitely uninstall Norton completely before using it in case it's still running -- 2 anti-virus clients at the same time will cause problems. AVG Anti-Spyware free trial isn't Anti-Virus software, it's just anti-spyware/anti-malware, similar to Ad-Aware which you are using.

Anyway, please disable AdWatch *completely* making sure it WON'T open again unless you open it yourself.

Right-click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".

Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.

Uncheck both of those boxes.

Now run a scan and check all these three objects for removal:

Now reopen AdWatch from Ad-Aware's menu and make sure it's running, post back a fresh HijackThis log.

Something a bit odd is going on here. You were right ad-watch was still running - had to close it through task manager, but wasn't visible in system tray. It appears not to be visible in system tray when I'm logged in as me, but is there when I'm logged in as administrator.

Anyway, when I run hijack this as me (not administrator) I get an error message:

"for some reason your system denied access to the hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, Hijack this may not be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit that file yourself. To do this, click start, run and type notepad "C\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" and press enter. Find the lines hijack this reports and delete them. Save the file as "hosts" (with quotes) and reboot.

then when I click ok, I get another message:
