Hello, I just registered and am new to this website, I would like some help with something that Microsoft posted in my systems tray next to the clock, it said that my Virtual Memory was too low, sorry I can't remember everything that the note said, but, that was the just of what I got from it. Can someone tell me what that means and if I need to do anything about it. I just got this PC 5 days ago from a neighbor who move out and gave this PC to me, so I'm still looking to see what's been downloaded and just doing a general check of things. I haven't familiarized myself with any of the system yet but I can tell you that: Software: XP - 2002 Hardware: Dell Sevice Pack 3 I just downloaded Adaware from Cnet.com and want to know is there anything special I have to do to get a good scan from Adaware??? Also, the person that gave me this PC must have changed some settings somewhere because I have to sign in every time I open up IE, my customized Home Page keeps disappearing and in order to get it back, I have to resign in. I keep feeling that something is either blocking the settings or the settings have been drastictly changed, even after I've clicked on the Tools tab, then Internet Options tab and clicked on Use current tab, it still won't stay put. Thank you for any help !!! Debra This post has been edited by simplee55: Oct 30 2009, 10:19 PM |

hello mario,
thanks 4 your reply. I looked at the list under "msconfig" and the things that are checked look really important, and I really dont know what to uncheck, I'm afraid to uncheck anything in fear that the PC wont boot up again so I dont know. Is it possible to tell me what can be unchecked??? Debra This post has been edited by simplee55: Oct 31 2009, 04:34 AM |

Hi simplee55 and welcome to Geeks to Go.
Lets see if we can sort some of the things out for you. QUOTE Virtual memory is space on your hard drive that is used when your physical memory (RAM) starts getting too full - information is moved from RAM to the hard drive temporarily (into the "swap file" which is the space reserved on your hard drive to act as virtual memory - the info can then be swapped back into physical memory as needed, but of course something else may need to be swapped onto the drive to make room for it). You can understand that making extensive use of your virtual memory can bog your system down quite badly. What this means is that: you do not have enough memory/ram You have a lot of programs running in the back ground You could also have malware/ virus Your hard drive is full. Lets see what your system specs are. Download (from my signature) Everest. Run everest On the far left expand computer Click on summary Go to the top and click on report click on quick report-summary click on plain text. copy the info to your next post. There is no need to include anything below Debug PCI [attachment=35445:Everest_...y_Report.jpg] What virus scanner is on the computer? Do you have a malware scanner? One that we use is MBAM (malware bytes anti malware) in my signature. Do you have any spyware scanners? What is the make and model of the computer? Is it a desktop or a laptop? 123runner |

You should have got to HERE.
On the right hand side...click on either Softpedia link It is a zipped file. Put the file in a folder on the desktop (right click on the desktop and choose "new folder") Unzip the file to get the executable. Click on the executable to install the program. Then run the program. It will give you what I showed you in my picture. Proceed with the instructions in post 4 |

Also to help 123Runner you need to help him with the Autoruns you have at this moment.
Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe". 3: Click on the "Everything" tab 4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete. 5: Go to File then to Export As. 6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to know location. 7: Attach to your next reply. |

That was going to be after everest. I will need you to look at that report before I offer my opinion on the startups. You are more versed in using autoruns. simplee55. Upload both the everest and autoruns reports so we can take a look at them. 123runner |

Runner;
I did what you said, I went to SOFTPEDIA and downloaded from the link that said: SOFTPEDIA Mirror (US) [zip] then, I right clicked on my desktop for a new folder but, after the download there are 17 files there, which file do I click on to UNZIP. I also just pointed to each of those 17 files and none says [.zip] at the end of those file all I see are [dll] files. And after I UNZIP it, will it automatically go into the new folder, or will I have to put it in the NEW FOLDER. simplee This post has been edited by simplee55: Oct 31 2009, 12:14 PM |

simplee55 try it this way.
Open it. 1: In left pane expand Computer folder. 2: Click once on Summary 3: In upper menu, go Report 4: And then to Quick Report-Summary 5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post. Click the + by computer, click on Sensor. Get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages... DO NOT INCLUDE ANYTHING UNDER THE LINE THAT SAYS "DEBUG- PCI" |

The file that you downloaded is called "everesthome220". It is a zipped file.
For cleanliness on my computer, all the files I download that are zipped, I put in their own folder. It keeps the files together. Place the "everesthome220" file in the folder. Extract/unzip it to the same folder. You will have 17 files. The file called everest (is green icon) is the executable to start and run/install the program. NOTE: Follow Rshaffer61's link. It is the executable. Download and doubleclick on it to install it. I will change my link in my signature |

No problem with screenshots. You provided the needed info.
First issue is this System Memory 512 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM) You have the bare minimum for your XP. This may have worked in the past but as you add new programs and your autoruns increase the amount of available memory goes down. Autoruns are the programs that run in the background when you start your system. These can be turned off in some instances if you would like to. The main issue at this point is increasing your memory. Go to HERE and run the Crucial online scanner. This will give you the exact memory configuration for your system. You do not have to buy the memory from there, but write down the information and if you need assistance in purchasing the upgrade memory GTG can assist with suggestions also. |

Now the option is how much memory do you want and what is your budget like?
For now you can try the following. Since your Hd doesn't seem to be running low on space, I want to make sure we can get rid of the Virtual memory problem. Please follow the next steps: Go to Start and then Right click on My Computer Click on Properties and then click on the Advanced Tab In the Performance area click on the Settings button When the new Window opens click on the Advanced Tab In the Virtual Memory area please click on Change Half way down the window you will see the System Managed Size option Select this if it isn't already selected Now click OK, OK, OK. This will now hopefully end the warnings. Let me know how everything works then. |

I have a problem. I right clicked on My Computer, than clicked the Advanced tab, under Advanced tab, there are two (2) tabs at the top, they say: GENERAL and SHORTCUT when I clicked on the Advanced tab under the GENERAL tab, it says ADVANCED ATTRIBUTES as the heading, but I see NO place, because there is NO place where I can click on SETTINGS. Under the SHORTCUT tab, I clicked on Advance tab and under and Advanced Properties heading, the whole box is shaded out, I can do nothing in that box at all, and there is no SETTINGS tab here either. I've never seen anything like this before. My thought is because this is a Dell PC and not a Compaq, maybe Dell builds their PC's differently than Compaq. I was given this PC from a person that moved out of my building 6-days ago, and I have no idea what is and what isn't on this PC, I only see as I go, like right now. I have no idea how this PC was built, but the person who gave this PC was a Special Needs kinda of person. After I set up and connected the PC, I booted up and got on the desktop, all the ICON's were screaming at me, every thing on this PC was/is oversized. Do you know of another way we can get to the Virtual Memory area to increase my memory capacity??? By the way, my budget is very, very tight right now. Thank you!!! simplee |

Go to Start then to Control Panel
Click on System then click on Advanced tab. In the Performance Field click on Settings Now on the Advanced Tab click on Change Now take a screenshot and include it in your next reply. To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key Now go to Start and then to All Programs Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop Attach it to your next reply |

Set for either
System managed or change Initial size to the same as maximum size Then click OK all the way out or Apply on any screen that shows it. You may be asked to reboot and if not please do. Let me know how it works then. Preferrably change the Initial size as I suggest |

On your picture you sent me you see where it says Initial Size?
Change that number to the same number as the one that is in the Maximum Size Then click OK till you have cliked OK on all the windows that you opened to get to that point. Reboot the system if it doesn't ask you to do it automatically. |

Did everything. My question is this, what should I be looking for now, a faster system??? If so, that didnt happen, the system booted up a little faster, but from what I have noticed since I've had this PC is, it boots up without any problems, but when I clicked on the link in my E-mail that bought me here, it took a little while for this page to open and display, believe it or not, the pages opened a tad bit faster in my opinion. What should I be looking for and what can I do or not do now. After I changed the Initial size to match the Maximum size what??? Also, you or Runner mentioned some thing about the downloading of large files, with the changes, can I still not download any large files. In the next month or so I want to increase my Memory and Drive size, how much will that be, and is it something that I can do myself with your help. One more thing, you mention this Autoruns, do I still need to do that. Thank U simplee This post has been edited by simplee55: Oct 31 2009, 04:51 PM |

The adjusted to virtual memory will hopefully stop the message that it is low for the time being.
The large files is because if your drive space is low it will fill up faster with the larger files. Memory and hard drive we can help with. When you are ready just start a new topic in this forum or in system builds and we can assist you with that. Did you do the full steps with the autoruns? If so then that should be done. If not then I suggest going back to that post and do the steps in order. That will hopefully speed things up alittle and also free up some system resources for you. The autoruns program is a useful program but you have to know what you are disabling or you can cause your system to become unusable. I would suggest uninstalling it if you have done the steps I suggested with it. There is no need to have any programs that do you no good. Keep TFC and Auslogics Defrag and use them about once a week till you are ready to do the upgrades. this will ensure that your system stays optimized. |

No, I haven't downloaded the Autoruns, wanted to get thru this process first. I totally agree with you rshaffer, I do not know what I should stop running on Startup and would disable my system.
Please forgive my stupidity, but TFC and Auslogics Defrag, I'm lost here. Are you talking about the systems Defrag or was the TFC something I was suppose to download. And if I am to download it, are there any special steps I should do with that program, and if I do download, should I run it right away???? |

Well it looks like we got side tracked and never got to the autoruns, tfc and defrag. So lets do it now.
Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe". 3: Click on the "Everything" tab 4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete. 5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions. 6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to know location. 7: Attach to your next reply. |

There are 4 folders here, none of them say Autoruns.exe, in fact, none of them say anything. The 1st folder looks like a notepad with a yellow ? make over it. The next (2) look the same and The last one looks like a text document. Which one do I click on. What "Everything tab", none that I can see. Steps 4-7 I havent gotten to yet, because I can't do the first (3). |

I finally figured it out. The only thing I'm not understanding is how to attach it to my reply so you can see it. I DEL every "File Not Found" and there were say about 10 of them. So I will wait for your instrucitons on how I'm going to get this file to you. Right now it's opened with about 5 other Windows, I'm afraid to close anything in fear I might mess something up. Also where you said in the instrucitons: Step #5 Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions. Of course you know there was no Export As key, so Save was it, and after the Save, I dont know where that information went .... HELP !!! |

Instead of clicking fast reply click on Add Reply
Under the place where you type message you will see a Browse button Click that and find the file you saved on your system and click it. Now click the Upload button next to the Browse button Once the message Upload was successful shows up then scroll down and click on the Add Reply button. |

Yes that's it. Now we move on to the next steps. Please follow the next steps in order and if you have any questions just ask.
I will try to stay with you for awhile yet but it is getting late here. Open Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab, and UN-check: + "Adobe Photo Downloader" + "dscactivate" + "ISUSPM Startup" + "ISUSScheduler" + "SunJavaUpdateSched" The next file needs to be manually disabled and is only needed if you use multi language on your keyboard. If you do then skip the step. To turn off just ctfmon.exe go to:
Click on the Languages Tab then click the Details button Click on the Advanced tab Check the box that says Turn off advanced text services option Click A and then OK When done restart computer and then: Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:
It will actually show you what it is doing At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged |

When you have completed all the steps then let me know how your system is running.
Is it faster now? Are you still getting the Low Virtual Memory error? |

You don't have to stay with me, I just read the instructions and if I run into a snag, I'll see you either tomorrow or on Monday. I really don't want to keep you any longer. It's only 8:46-pm here and I am really tired of being on this PC. So I'm going to call it a night myself. Thank you so much for all you have done rshaffer and putting up with my stupidity ... This note is for tomorrow or Monday, whenever you come on. Downloading TFC by OldTimer, you said if I am running Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator. I'm running XP-2002. So my question is: Will there be instructions for running XP instead of Vista when I go to the Website???? I have no problem with your other instructions. Low Virtual Memory: I only got that message one time, down in the Systems Tray, and when I saw that, it took me back to Christopher's PC, and yes it's me Debra .... (smile). And I didnt want to have any problems with this PC, considering it's my PC .... (smile again) !!! This post has been edited by simplee55: Oct 31 2009, 10:29 PM |

Instructions for TFC are for XP.
The mention of Vista is only a side note to Vista users. Follow the instructions as they written. when you click the link I provided for TFC there should be a window that comes up asking to save the file. Save it to your desktop and then run it. |

Just as a suggestion I would uninstall AVG.
Install Avast for virus protection as it is a smaller program and not so resource hungry. Also please run a new Autoruns report and attach it to your next reply. |

OK, I will uninstall AVG, I do whatever I'm told because your the BOSS ....
Just in case 123RUNNER sees this post, I ran the ATF Cleaner and it never asked about if I wanted to keep my passwords, and what I had to go thru to re-sign in here, it's not joke. But, my system is running faster than earlier today, thanks Runner and rshaffer, couldnt do it without yeaaaaaaaa !!!! By running the ATF program, it has FREED: 484.844 MBs, and I can feel it now. Because of the Cleaner, every time I come back I have to re-sign in, why ??? Will be back after I do the uninstall and install of Avast. There is some things I want to get your expertise about !!! The ATF cleaner cleans out all the locations you saw when you ran the program. That is windows temp, current users temp, all users temp, cookies, temp internet files, history, prefetch, java cache, and recycle bin. Also whatever is under Firefox. It cleans the junk from the computer and frees up hard drive space. When you run it again keep cookies unchecked. We recommend about once a week. You can also uncheck perfetch and history also. At some point you need to run the Auslogics defrag. The hard drive is most likely fragmented and this will also slow the system down. Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:
It will actually show you what it is doing At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged http://auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download And yes, thanks for the kind words. It makes the experience of what we do that much more enjoyable. 123runner |

I just installed the Avast program. Are there any special instructions I need to do in this program in order to get the optimal performance. Also, just recapping, is it still your professional opinion that I do not download any large files. I have to tell you my secret, I love playing these Hidden Object games and I always try their games before I actually would purchase, but some of them can be large in nature. Feed back please !!! |

No problem with trying them as long as they are free.
If after you have tried them and uninstall them make sure you run the defrag program to straighten your drive out again. No special instructions for Avast except to make sure you register it which is free for a year. After that year just reregister for another year. Use the default settings and you should be good to go. |

Because I've never ran Avast before, are there any instructions I need to give this program to get the optimal results of the scan??? After I downloaded the program, a box pops up and said it needs to Boot so it can run it's Reboot Scan?? So I dont want to do that until I here back from one of you guys. simplee !!! Nope it will setup optimized by default.
It will automatically update itself usually once a day. Defrag doesn't matter if you run it before or after installation of Avast. |

Wow, 19.75% fragmented. That could be a winner. I do not recall a drive being that fragmented.
Doing the defrag will help performance. I also found something on the ATF cleaner and clearing the perfetch folder (which is part of their instructions...not ours). When we cleared the perfetch folder, we cleared the needed "pages to load" that a program generates in order to start. Not to worry because they will be re-created and all will be well. Till they are re-created, the system will seem a little slow. That will pass. Next time you use ATF cleaner, uncheck the perfetch and the cookies. Reading about the perfetch folder and files |

Guys:
So far, the performance is excellent, much faster. No rshaffer there has been no more Virtual Memory messages, it was only one time that Microsoft alerted me and that's when I ran to you guys. One time is more than enough for me. A new 19% record huh Runner, yeah, but as I said in one of my earlier posts, this PC was given to me and I have no idea what is or what's not on it. I guess you don't know these type things until you have it in your own possession and start working on it to find things like this. This woman was a Special Needs person, so I don't know how much she knew about maintaining a computer. Question Runner, that box you said that should have asked me about the PASSWORD, well it never came up to ask if I wanted to keep my passwords, why ??? Another thing guys, is there anyway of deleting the repetitive posts I did. I was trying to UPLOAD my newly ran AutoRun and thought it was taking and when I realized it wasn't, that nothing was happening, it was too late. So can those 3 or 4 posts be deleted??? Do you want to see my AutoRun again. And is there anything else I should do to the computer that I haven't done??? simplee |

A moderator or admin will eventually look at this topic and make the changes to the repetitive posts you ask about.
As for the keeping the system clean just run the Atf program every once in a while. Maybe Once a week. Run Auslogics Defrag about the same. This will keep temp files at a minimum and your system files in good working order. A good Antivirus, Malware and Spyware programs will help in protecting the system against infections. No need for the Autoruns report as the system is running correctly. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions or if you need clarification on anything. |

Yeah, as I told you rshaffer I download that Avast antivirus program and ran it, no critters found and I ran the Ad-aware program and it found 52 objects on the system, but I have to re-run the program again because I lost the results. May I post it for your viewing and tell me what should or shouldn't be Quarantined??? There is something else I want to ask though. I think that my IE maybe corrupted, is there a way of uninstalling IE and reinstalling it without the system going nuts??? Should I post this problem under a New topic in another place?? |

rshaffer:
I just started the scan, it takes about 30-mins, will give what it finds as soon as it's finish. Internet Explorer: When I open up IE my home page is not showing. Where you have to sign in, you check the box that says: "Keep me logged in". I never ever uncheck that box, but I cant stay logged in. I have several times, clicked on "Tools" tab, than Internet Options, there is "My Yahoo" showing in that little window, I click the tab right underneath it that says: "Use current", tab to lock in my Customized home page, but after I close out of IE and reopen it, there is Yahoo's default home page, I guess that's what you would call it. So after communicating with Yahoo's tech support, it was mentioned in that conversation that IE might possibly be corrupted, if none of the steps that were given worked. As of right now, I haven't been able to do anything because of the other problems with the PC. I asked the question about IE just in case none of those steps gaven me worked, just wanted to know how to proceed from that point, just in case I get to that point. simplee |

QUOTE Question Runner, that box you said that should have asked me about the PASSWORD, well it never came up to ask if I wanted to keep my passwords, why ??? To answer this question. If you have Firefox or Opera and you select all under those tabs across the top, then you will get the question about keeping the passwords. You probably do not use firefox (mozilla) or opera as browsers. |

Here are the Screen shot of Adaware after running the scan. Also, MyWebSearch I thought I deleted it, in fact I know I did, but FunWeb, I've seen that in the Program Files in the "C" drive, I had no idea that's where MyWeSearch came from. I hate these ToolBars. I did a complete search of Files and Folders looking just for those critters. In fact, I regularly go into the "C" drive to see if everything is ok. What I've noticed is this, When you do a SEARCH on the "C" drive a lot of items that I'm searching for, things I know I've seen on the "C" drive, well the SEARCH results come up "NOT FOUND". I have to fiscally go into that drive and delete the File(s) or Folder(s) myself, this shouldn't be. Runner: I only use IE 8. I dont like the feel of FireFox or of the other One. |

if you notice, there is no About under the Helps page. Internet Explorer: See the screen shots for your questions: Also, that's Yahoo's default home page, not the one I want. Notice the SIGN IN tab in yellow. Always have to go there so I can log in. It can be very frustrating. Why Win8?? Well I guess I'm one of Microsoft's loyal followers. Years ago I tried FireFox and couldn't get use to how to navigate thru that browser and there were features that I didn't like, just didn't feel right to me, Opera was the same. Even though there are Security issues with IE, I'm use to it and like the feel of how Gates built it ... go figure. And how I know it's IE8 is, I clicked on Control Panel and Add -- Remove Programs, and saw Win Internet Explorer 8. This post has been edited by simplee55: Nov 2 2009, 05:48 PM |

No at the top of the IE window you see the word Help?
Click on that and then About should be there. Also it seems that MyWebSearch has installed a tooldbar according to the warning but I see no tooldbar. You may have a active infection on your system. I suggest you go to the Malware Removal and Spyware Removal Forum and run all the steps located in the START HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own. If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post the reguested logs in THAT forum. If you are unable to run any of the tools then start a new topic in the malware forum and put this in the subject line...I am unable to run any malware tools If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s). Add a link to this topic so that malware tech can see what steps have been taken here |

Got your instructions, thanks. I didnt think that you were fiscally looking for any tool bars. I hide somethings on IE, let me unhide them and show you what's there. I hide them because it gives me more screen space than having all the little ICONS taking up too much space. I will show you a new SCREEN shot. Also, I deleted MyWebSearch. Should I also delete FunWeb too??? And so there is nothing showing in that Adware report that I should be concerned with. |

I have a question for you. Would you be willing to look at the long E-mail instructions that Yahoo Tech Support sent me on hopefully solving the IE problem??? Well, the whole thing are not instructions, it's more telling me what the problem could possibly be. Towards the bottom of the E-mail are the instructions. simplee |

Readers digest version them and attach a notepad with the instructions.
If you can scan them in and save the file as a notpad that will work also. |

Debra, Thank you for writing to My Yahoo!. I understand you are still getting sent back to the sign-in page. I realize how frustrating this could be and apologize for the inconvenience and the time taken to resolve the issue. This is typically caused by a cookie not being properly set within your browser. A "cookie" is a small piece of information stored by your browser to help identify who you are. Yahoo! uses cookies to keep you signed in to your account as you move from page to page. If your cookie isn't being accepted properly, you'll be signed out of your account when you move to a different page. This is most likely why you're having trouble signing in and remaining signed in. There are a number of reasons why your cookie may not be set properly. I've listed them from easiest to hardest in order to save you unnecessary steps. If you have any questions regarding any of the recommendations, please reply to this message and I will gladly assist you. I. The date on your computer is set incorrectly. Since cookies rely on dates, a computer with an incorrect date may "mislead" your browser into forgetting about your cookie. To fix this, set the correct time and date on your computer. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - II. You have installed an application that monitors/blocks cookies from being sent. These include virus protection software, etc. To remedy this, disable the monitoring application before Signing In. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - III. You are behind a firewall that doesn't allow you to receive cookies. This could be the case for users connecting from a business intranet that limits cookie acceptance for security reasons. To check if this is a factor, contact your System's Administrator. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - IV. Your browser is not set to accept cookies. Most browsers have the option of either accepting all cookies, showing an alert before accepting a cookie, or not accepting cookies at all. In order to use Yahoo!'s personalized services, your browser must be set to accept "all cookies without alerts". To configure your browser to accept cookies, follow the instructions below for your browser and version. When making these adjustments, be sure to confirm any changes you make by clicking "OK". Internet Explorer: 1. Click the 'Tools' menu and select 'Internet Options'. 2. Click on the 'Privacy' tab. 3. Make sure the security level is set to 'Medium' or 'Medium-Low'. 4. Click 'OK'. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - V. Your browser's cookie files might be corrupted. Corrupted cookie files sometimes stop supporting Yahoo! Mail. Try shutting all of your browser's windows, and then deleting the cookie files in your browser's directories. You should delete the cookie files themselves, but you do not need to delete the folders where they are stored. If you're using another operating system: Some web browsers have their own existing steps for deleting cookies. For instance, with Internet Explorer versions 4 and higher on Macintosh, you can delete the cookies files via the 'Cookies' panel in Internet Preferences. For browsers that don't have that ability, these general instructions may help: Find the cookie files. To find these files: 1. Use your operating system's "Find" or "Search" feature to search for the word "cookies". 2. This should bring up a list of the folders and files with the word "cookies" in their file names. 3. Identify the Internet cookie files. It is important to differentiate Internet cookie files from other files with the word "cookies" in their file names. Internet cookie files are usually located within your browser's directory on your hard drive. 4. Delete the Internet cookie files. Do NOT delete any file that you believe you may have created yourself or that you suspect might not be an Internet cookie file. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - VI. If none of the above suggestions have solved your problem, your browser itself might be corrupted. The easiest solution may be to try another browser on your computer. You may want to reinstall your current browser as well by finding the original installation file and repeating the install process. As a last resort, you can download a new browser, or an updated version of your present browser, from the Internet. The Internet Explorer browser can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/ie/download/ If after trying these recommendations, you continue having trouble, please reply directly to this email and let me know what steps you tried and we can continue troubleshooting. Your satisfaction is very important to us and we truly appreciate your patronage of My Yahoo! Thanks rshaffer simplee |

OK let's take this one step at a time
QUOTE I. The date on your computer is set incorrectly. Since cookies rely on dates, a computer with an incorrect date may "mislead" your browser into forgetting about your cookie. To fix this, set the correct time and date on your computer. Check the date by rebooting your system and at the first post screen tap the DEL button. This will allow you into the bios. First screen should have the date and time. Are they correct? If not set them and then click F10 to save and exit. Click Y to verify Save and Exit System will reboot. Try IE now and let me know if it works. |

I am very uncomfortable with these instructions, but I did attempt it. Let me Quote you: Check the date by rebooting your system and at the first post. Do you mean at the first (1st) screen, tap the DEL button??? The very first (1st) screen is the DELL logo screen. On that screen in the upper RIGHT hand corner it says F2 = Set up and F12 = Booth Menu I started tapping the DEL key and nothing happened, it just kept right on going to the 2nd screen with is the WinXP screen, than the Desktop. Maybe it's fear that wouldn't let me keep hitting that DEL key, but I did do it. But I wanted to make sure I totally understood what you are saying to. |

F2 setup is the one you need to do.
I understand the unknown but if you don't try we can't run the problem down. You have done great so far and as long as you don't change anything without my instructions you will be fine. Once you are in the setup area I just need to make sure the date and time is set correctly. If it is then no need to change any settings. Then just exit out and system will reboot. |

OK suggestions 2 and 3 are highly unlikely since we have changed these anyway.
Firewall issue would only apply if you had changed the settings or a infection caused this. QUOTE IV. Your browser is not set to accept cookies. Most browsers have the option of either accepting all cookies, showing an alert before accepting a cookie, or not accepting cookies at all. In order to use Yahoo!'s personalized services, your browser must be set to accept "all cookies without alerts". Open IE and at the top of the page click on Tools Then click on Internet Options In new window click on Privacy Under Settings what is the slider set at? |

QUOTE V. Run ATF or TFC which ever one I had you get back when we started. Also we may need to uninstall your IE and reinstall it if the above doesn't work. |

Let's just cut to the chase and totally UNINSTALL IE. The Yahoo Tech said to do a search for COOKIES which I did, nothing came up in the search window. I left it alone, didn't want to delete something I wasn't suppose to. I don't know if you remember me stating that went I look for files in the Search window, things come up NOT FOUND and I know that I've seen them in the "C" drive, I have to fiscally go and DELETE them, that's after I've done the uninstall of course. So it's pretty obvious to me that the Search option is not working properly. |

There should not be any corrupt cookies.
There may only be a few on the system because when you ran ATF cleaner we had you clear all of that out. Cookies should not be a problem. Cookies are usually located at C:\Documents and settings\administrator C:\Documents and settings\your name You should see a couple folders named "cookies". |

OK then go to Control Panel then to Add\RemovePrograms
At the top of the window put a checkmark in the box labeledShow Updates Now scroll down through the list till you find the IE8 update. Highlight and then click the Remove button to the right. Once uninstalled then go back to IE and it should be back to either version 6 or 7. Try IE and see if now it works. If so then go to windows update and do the IE update again. Try IE again after update and let us know how everything works then. |

The top one will or should uninstall the others. If not then uninstall them also.
The top one is the actual IE 8 program update. |
