OS: Vista Home premium 32 bit

Hello everyone,

As you all probably know Vista SP1 has been released. I don't want to install it until I know if it is any good or not. Has anyone tried SP1 or read about someone trying out SP1? Results?

I own Vista home premium 32 bit.

Thanks!

I have no idea if it is any good but a friend of mine tested the BETA version and says..... get VISTA SP1!
I will download it this afternoon.
In the meantime, anyone wanting to install VISTA SP1 should read this article from MS because there are more than one version for the 32bit patch:

I put SP1 on my machine last night.
I do not see any difference, yet.
I did not have any problems at all, and the computer works well after the install.
I would like to point out that the download is over 400MB.
It also takes about 50 minutes to install.
Give yourself a few hours when you will not be using the computer to do the download.

I installed sp1 on Vista Ultimate yesterday about 2:00 PM, The download was only about 69 MB for me (got it from Windows Update) I see that if you download the file from the download page rather then windows update it is a rather large file download.

Took a little under an hour to install and one reboot.

My personal experience with 32 bit Vista Ultimate and sp1:

1. I noticed an increase in networking performance, I am able to browse to local computers on my network faster, my computer connected to the internet faster at boot up by a few seconds.

2. Windows explorer opens faster and performs better then it did before, file coping appears easier from drive to drive. less hesitation.

3. Windows now reports that I have the correct amount of physical memory although I don't believe they are able to make use of more then 3.5 gig on a 32 bit system, at least Vista now reports the correct amount if you have more.

I had no driver issues and it went smoothly for me, overall I am pleased with it and would defiantly report improvement after the install.

myke

I had about the same result except mine was 87 mg on two Vista Ultimate systems and 1 Business version that took a little longer because I downloaded the sp1 version of MS downloads so far so good.

I said this morning that I would download VISTA SP1 this afternoon and let you know my results.
Sorry, but the SP1 is not available via "Update" (65MB) here in Australia until mid April.
I haven't got the time to wait for the 456MB full version at present and will wait until April for the faster download.

Yes, yes, yes!
Vista SP1 makes significant changes to Vista. XP SP3 is just a collection of all of the updates, but Vista SP1 actually makes a number of its own changes. For me, my computer boots faster, is more reliable coming out of hybrid sleep, and is a lot faster file sharing with my MacBook. smile.gif I've also found that a lot of UAC quirks have been fixed.
Don't worry about it crashing - if it doesn't work, it will undo itself. If it works, you'll be all the happier.

Installed without a hitch. Performence seems to be about the same..maybe a little slower but I heard that is because of something called Superfetch or something like that....

Games seem to be about the same... The Crysis demo GPU test seems to have gained about 2-5 FPS.... The Age Of Empires 3 demo is about the same... I didn't try Flight Sim X yet...

Internet explorer seems to move a little quicker than before. DVD's seem sharper than before.

Hmmm... I'll keep watching. But for now it seems good. smile.gif

Installed SP1-no problem with install other than minor changes to my sound card settings. Unfortuneatly it did not solve the nagging problems with USB device recognition or the occasional hangs that are a pain (the hangs may be a 64 bit issue). There doesn't seem to be any soultion to the USB problem. I've got a ticket open with Microsoft (now almost a week and 4 different support folks) but still no resolution. The only thing I noticed different was a sudden decrease in the number of spam messages - though that could be coincidence.

So there is all these different file sizes that are being downloaded. I had to understand why...

The SP1 is still not available in my Updates, which is where MS strongly recommends it be downloaded from, here is why:

Fist of all, if you go to the download page at microsoft, you will notice in BIG CAPITAL LETTERS:

DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download is available on Windows Update.

Furthermore:

Things to know before you download Windows Vista SP1
Published: March 18, 2008

  • Windows Vista SP1 is available in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. Other languages will be made available soon.
  • Microsoft strongly recommends using Windows Update to download and install Windows Vista SP1 on single PCs:
    • The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x86 is 65 MB (compared to 450 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).
    • The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x64 is 125 MB (compared to 745 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).
    • Windows Update will recognize PCs with known problematic drivers and postpone downloading Windows Vista SP1 until the PC has updated drivers or other applicable updates. Using Windows Update will help ensure you have the most trouble-free update experience possible.
    • Some Windows Vista users may encounter an issue with a small set of hardware devices that may not function properly after updating a Windows Vista PC to Windows Vista SP1. This is an issue with the way the device drivers were re-installed during the Windows Vista SP1 update process, not with the drivers themselves—these drivers worked on Windows Vista RTM and they work on Windows Vista SP1. This problem is typically corrected by simply uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. We are working with the manufacturers of these devices to get the known problematic drivers and their install programs updated, and also on other solutions we can use to ensure a smooth customer experience when updating to Windows Vista SP1 using Windows Update. For new PCs provisioned with Windows Vista SP1, this is not an issue.
  • If you choose to install Windows Vista SP1 via the standalone installer available on the Microsoft Download Center, Microsoft advises that you first visit Windows Update and install all optional drivers. Read Knowledge Base Articles 948187 and 948343 for more information.
  • If you have a prior version of the Windows Vista SP1 beta installed, you must uninstall it prior to installing the final version. Use the Control Panel applet "Programs and Features" and select "View installed updates" from the top left of the task pane. Under Windows, look for "Service Pack for Windows (KB936330).
(this information comes directly from: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...a/bb968859.aspx )

If you don't want to take a chance of having problems, don't rush to download something that your computer is not ready for.
