Vista Update failure, Update stuck in endless reboot loop

This thing is set to DL & install updates automatically. Last one is causing it to just constantly reboot. Gets to 87% of part 3, then shuts down & does it all over again, & again & again!

Finally I shut it down manually after it went through that for several hours. Tried safe mode. It does the exact same thing, Going back to normal mode (installing Updates) after 1st automatic reboot from safe mode.

Any help?

FWIW, the machine is clean of virus spyware etc to the best of my knowledge. religious about running those scans, have good firewall, AV, antispyware etc.

All I had was the recovery discs you make yourself, no actual Vista disc.
But I was able to use recover-restore through that and get it back in working order. Lucky me!
(but only after several hours of backing up files -just in case)

I see there are a lot of people out there that had great deal of trouble with that little "feature" LOL
