Hey folks, i hope someone can help, a work colleague has a new laptop, running vista. It has all of a sudden stopped booting up with a "windows explorer has stopped working message" over a black screen. I thought maybe i could get into safe mode and fiddle around or do a system restore but it's the same story there as well! any idea what the problem is? i did a scout around google and it seems to be a common problem but couldn't see a solution! can anybody help?

Cheers smile.gif

Hello, and welcome to Geeks To Go.
Do you have a valid copy of the Vista DVD?
If so let us start here.
How to run checkdisk from recovery console (Windows xp). (Courtesy dsenette)
  1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Note:Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
  2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Note:If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
  3. When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  4. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following then press Enter:
    chkdsk /r
  5. Allow this to run UNDISTURBED until completed (45 min or so)
  6. Report any errors

hfcq: The XP repair install (its equivalent) does not exist for Vista, there is no press R option when installing so that last post is inaccurate, your first post is great advice though.

I have recovery console on my Vista home premium upgrade DVD.
The recovery disc from a manufacture like HP, Dell, Etc... do not have recovery console.
I have used the recovery console from my Vista DVD to do a repair on my system.

The recovery console is there but the repair installation is not (the one that replaces all your files but keeps the registry that the thread you linked to is about).
