Vista suddenly freezing

What the title says, my computer will suddenly stop responding. the programs will stop working, pressing CTRL+ALT+Delete doesn't work, and pressing the power button doesn't shut down the computer. No programs will "grey out" like when they normally stop responding; animations in the taskbar freeze, and clicking does nothing. I can still move the mouse around, it's like the mouse buttons are disabled. this all happens about every 15-20 minutes if I have multiple programs open, and about 30-45 minutes if I use 1 program at a time. this all started happening yesterday morning, around when I tried to create 4+ virtual drives with PowerISO (this may not be the problem, it's just the biggest event I can remember.) the freezing was happening more often until I disabled all the virtual drives from both PowerISO and DAEMON Tools Lite. Then it let up a small amount, but the freezing still happens.

I have followed all malware removal steps, and I have all the logs, if anyone needs them. MBAM found no infections.

I have restarted twice while writing this.

1. Did you try System Restore?

2. Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
- security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

3. Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

My processor is an Intel core 2 duo CPU at 2 GHz with 2 GB of RAM.
My hard drive is 221 GB with 37.1 GB free. (I haven't defragmented it in a while.)
My antivirus is Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.

Temps look normal for laptop.

You didn't say, if you tried System Restore.

You're running little bit low on hard drive space. Windows minimum free space at 15% means around 33GB in your case.

Sorry, I forgot. yes, I used system restore. it didn't help.

And I've had as little as 3 GB left on that one hard drive before, and had no problems.

That's not the point. You're lucky. Just to let you know, that when the computer runs really low on a free space, it may become un-bootable at all.

1. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

2. Defrag.

3. Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.micro...s/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Export As, and save AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Okay, I already have ATF cleaner, and ran it, but I'll do it again.

I've tried defragging with JKDefrag, but my computer doesn't stay "un-froze" long enough to finish. but I did all this yesterday, so I'll try again.

EDIT: Forgot the AutoRuns.txt. I attached it.

I tried defragmenting again, and it froze. After clickiing around several times (with nothing happening) and leaving it alone for about 10 minutes, the screen had blacked out with an error that said something along the lines of "Failure - Security Options." What is this?

Try defrag in Safe Mode.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD, and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, which is not listed, try using Hitachi tools.

What hard drive manufacturer are we talking about here?

- Download Drive Fitness Test Windows Diskette Creator v4.15 b01 (12.16.2008) <-----will create bootable floppy for you

The two below are image type of files, first one for a floppy, the second one for a CD. Download the file, and burn it, using ImgBurn (my previous reply). ImgBurn will create bootable disk.
