Hi - first time poster.

My hard drive (149G) is suddenly full. When I look at properties on Local Disk C it says 142G is used; when I click on the C drive icon, Documents and Settings properties show 134G used; when I open D and S, All Users (3 folders) is 111G; when I open All Users, the 3 folders in there only total up to 180Kb + 1.65Mb; User's total is
22Gb.

I used SequoiaView, and it shows a huge amount of space used up by C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\dumpsavgcsrvx.exe_128873750573056250_F.dmp. (The numbers are all different). There are approximately 1350 of these files averaging 80Mb each.

BUT - I cannot find a file called "Application Data". I can't find these files anywhere.

What are they - do I need them, and if not, how do I get rid of them??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried using CCleaner or ATFCleaner?

No.

I did use Kapersky Online Scanner, and it showed a file tree and I could see the files there. (The scan showed no malware)

How can I generate that file tree on my desktop?

I ran CCLeaner. No real result.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.


If this does not work then:

Go to:
Start and then My Computer
Right Click On "C" drive and then click on Properties
Click on Tools tab at the top
In the Error Checking field click Check Now


When that is done

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:

It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged



Reboot and let me know how system is running now

Downloaded ATF Cleaner; ran it. No change in HDD space.

Ran check disk - volume is clean; no change in HDD space.

The problem remains: I would like to know what AVG dump files are; can I remove them?

How do I access them - I need some sort of tree to be able to access them; I can only see those files on a scan; not through Windows menus.

Before doing thet delete of these files please do the following:

Download WhoCrashed from the link in my signature below
This program checks for any drivers which may have been causing your computer to crash....

Click on the file you just downloaded and run it.
Put a tick in Accept then click on Next
Put a tick in the Don't create a start menu folder then click Next
Put a tick in Create a Desktop Icon then click on Install and make sure there is a tick in Launch Whocrashed before clicking Finish
Click Analyze
It will want to download the Debugger and install it Say Yes

WhoCrashed will create report but you have to scroll down to see it
Copy and paste it into your next reply


To delete the files:

Go to
Start and then to Search
click on All Files and Folders
In the top window that says All or part of the file name type in *.dmp
In the window that says Look in make sure it is set for your C or Main Drive
Click on Search
Any DMP files you should be safe to delete.

I had previously searched for a specific one of the avg8 dump files. No results. I just searched for *.dmp. No results. That is what is so frustrating; I see the files on Sequoia; I see them in a tree when I run a virus scan, but I can't find them or access them on my computer. And there are hundreds of them.

I also always get a "Invalid boot disk" error every time I reboot. I just hit a key and it goes away . . .

Hi Cardyz,

Your Application Data folder is hidden. Here are the steps to access that folder, but extreme caution must be used in accessing them (they are hidden for a reason). I highly recommend that you only delete files which you are positive you do not need, or you may find yourself re-installing your program. Once you have deleted your files, be sure to hide those folders again. I would also recommend setting a Restore point prior to deleting any hidden files or folders (if you are unsure of how to do this, please ask).

To show hidden files and folders:

• Right click the Start button and select Explore.
• In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
• Click the View tab.
• Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
• Click Apply.

To re-hide hidden files and folders:

• Right click the Start button and select Explore.
• In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
• Click the View tab.
• Under Hidden files and folders, click Do not show hidden files and folders.
• Click Apply.

I created a system restore point (although, my system restores always fail). I'm not worried about having to reinstall AVG.

Before I delete the files, my questions still remain:

What are AVG dump files? There are 111Gb of them in this folder.

Are they necessary/will AVG just create them again?

I went ahead and deleted the AVG dump files and freed up 118 Gb on my hard drive.

I'm glad it worked!! I'm sorry, I don't know why AVG has created those files. I used AVG for a while and never noticed them on my system. You may try contacting their customer support, or a fresh installation of the program.

Me either. First time im seeing that happen. Symantec Antivirus 8 Corporate did the same thing, created log files almost 500MB PER DAY.

I have just had a similar problem, it filled up all of my hard drive! I've also been getting a error message that won't go away

did u have that problem too or is this unrelated?

I never rec'd error msg from AVG; I just noticed that my HDD was suddenly full; downloaded Sequoia and saw a massive amount of AVG dump files. Now my AVG has an incorrect binary file and won't update; won't uninstall either.

Perhaps you should try uninstall and reinstalling . . .
