When I start up I see a message on the dos screen which reads: The following file is missing or corrupt C:\windows\DBLDUFF.SYS. Could this be the cause? It has also been suggested to me to reduce the programs that start up automatically. But I don't know which files I should leave on and which I should turn off. Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thank you. |

Welcome wabbit
Both the conditions you describe can be caused by a virus or worm. Do you have anti-virus software installed? Click Here for a free on-line virus scan. If that comes back clean we'll try another way to resolve it. Click Here and scroll down the page to Startup List for instructions on creating a startup list with Hijack This. Reply with your startup list and we'll make recommendations on what to remove. Finally, a memory upgrade (up to at least 128MB) would do a lot to speed up your system. |

Hi, even though I have the current Norton Virus, I went to Housecall and ran that scan also. It came back clean. I forgot to mention the problem with freezing up alot in addition to the others I discribed. Thanks.

See the Hijack This Guide in my signature and paste the log back to this topic. Most entries are harmless. Don't make any changes until recommended to do so.

Looks like the copy and paste went wrong. Did you read this part?
QUOTE Additional Copy and Paste Instructions
Open the text file. Go to the Toolbar of your text editor, Notepad for example and click Edit. Move the mouse down to Select All and click on Select All to highlight the text. Go back to Edit again and move the mouse down to Copy. Click Copy. Go to the Forum and reply to your original post. When the page opens, click on an empty space in the reply window with your mouse to set focus for the paste operation. Finally, hold down the Ctrl button and click the letter v on the keyboard to paste the text into your post. |

Hello again, I have tried to perform this function many times. When I download Hijackthis it goes to wordpad and the text is all strange symbols and characters. I tried saving different ways. The result has been the same each time. Thanks. P.S. I followed all the copy paste instructions and I can perform them in other programs without difficulty. |

Sorry, missed your last post.
Try attaching the log file to your post, and then I'll see if I can read it on this end. QUOTE can you please just tell me how I go about upgrading the memory? I often recommend Crucial. They have an easy to use memory selector, very good quality memory, and fair prices. Memory also includes clear instructions for installing. |
