Hi. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!
I'm running Windows XP. Everything has been fine until recently. Now Windows Explorer crashes any time I try to open a folder. Just running Windows Explorer or My Computer causes a crash (though I CAN browse directories using a command prompt). After each crash, the screen goes blank and then the desktop, taskbar, etc. repaints itself. During this same period, my pc got infected with spyware. I've run Norton AntiVirus, AdAware, HijackThis and Spybot. They all found stuff, but I still have some kind of bug. According to Norton, I have a file called IdieUI.dll. Norton can't remove it. I've read a little about it on the web, but I can't find any sure-fire way to remove it (especially since I can't access my files). I'm not sure how much the spyware has to do with the Windows Explorer crashes. Any ideas? Thanks, Marcus |

More info: Norton can't complete a scan. At then end of the scan, it gives me this message in a popup:
"Norton AntiVirus was unable to scan your computer for Infections." Norton has a web page to help deal with this problem, but the steps involve doing a file search, which, of course, I can't do. ============= Here's the HiJackThis log file: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.0 Scan saved at 7:42:53 PM, on 12/21/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\CDANTSRV.EXE C:\Program Files\Executive Software\DiskeeperWorkstation\DKService.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NORTON~2\GHOSTS~2.EXE C:\Program Files\Keep Me Posted\KMPServ.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\mdm.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\IWP\NPFMntor.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tablet.exe C:\Program Files\HHVcdV5Sys\VC5SecS.exe C:\Program Files\RealVNC\WinVNC\WinVNC.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\carpserv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\TrayIcon.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\DllHost.exe C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Ghost\GhostStartTrayApp.exe C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\OmniPageSE\opware32.exe C:\WINDOWS\tppaldr.exe C:\Program Files\HHVcdV5Sys\VC5Play.exe C:\Program Files\HighCriteria\TotalRecorder\TotRecSched.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\adlcjt32.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Distillr\AcroTray.exe C:\Program Files\ABIT\Common\Bin\WinCinemaMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\devldr32.exe C:\Program Files\Wacom\TabUserW.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\EXCEL.EXE C:\Documents and Settings\Marcus\Desktop\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.popupsearches.com/sidesearch.html R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing O2 - BHO: HelperObject Class - {00C6482D-C502-44C8-8409-FCE54AD9C208} - C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt 6\SnagItBHO.dll O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Go to control panel, add/remove programs and uninstall any or all of the following:
FlashGet PartyPoker WinVNC Any toolbar/searchbar except for google. You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure. Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible. Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked. Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN
How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here. QUOTE Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer. Consumes no system resources. Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page. It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows. These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection. 1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox .2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine . It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay. After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. A drink? -=jonnyrotten=- |
