Windows ME boot, ME startup menu won't get lost

I'm running Windows ME on an HP 5430 laptop. Everytime I turn on the computer I get taken to the Windows ME Start-up Menu. I have 30 seconds to choose from the 4 options. The computer loads normally after I select #1-Normal Startup. The computer is at least 5 years old but this problem started a couple of months ago. It's reallly more of an annoyance than a problem - especially since it willl start normally after 30 seconds even if no choice from the menu has been selected.

Any ideas on how to get rid of the Start-up menu?

Its been a long time since I used an ME machine but if you go to Start>Run and type in msconfig you will bring up the System Configuration Utility. Look for "Safe Boot" and uncheck it if it is checked. It may be in the Advanced area. With 98SE its called "Enable Startup Menu".

Thanks a lot. Your suggestion did the trick. msconfig<generall<Advanced <uncheck "Enable Start-up Menu" fixed the annoying problem of always having to look at the start up menu when booting.

Many thanks
