Just yesterday, my WMP 11 stopped playing video files. It stopped playing .avi, .mpg, .mpeg but plays wmv format. it also plays mp3s. What could be wrong. Ive search this problem over the net and found out that some also experience this but so far, no solution. My video files are not the problem because i tried them and they worked using VLC player.

The error says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." but i doubt its a codec problem because it used to work. or maybe the codec got deleted or something. but how?

I had my laptop almost 3 months now. It's running windows vista (home premium) but this problem never occured up until yesterday. I didn't install anything. My norton internet security license just expired 3 days ago but i dont think that has something to do with it. My WMP11 came preinstalled with the OS.

Can anyone help me with this problem? Thanks. :whistling:

When this happened to me it was a conflict between WMP11 and VLC. Try uninstalling VLC, then restart your computer. Let me know if that works.

weird thing happened, for sometime yesterday and today, the videos worked perfectly with wmp11 again like it did before. what happened is that i changed my default program for .avi file to vlc and then i tried to play it with wmp11 and it worked. i changed the default to wmp11 and after a couple of restarts, the problem returned.

i will try to uninstall vlc and see if it'll work. thanks for the reply.

i uninstalled vlc and it totally worked. i thought it was just a ompatibility issue with wmp11 and vista, so i tried to reinstall vlc but a more updated verson. At first it worked but again, after a couple of restarts, the problem returned. anyway, i maintained vlc and made it my default media player.

thanks man.

anyway, if anyone finds out a solution to this problem, please tell me. thanks
