Windows Prefetch Folder Missing

I checked the prefetch file because my system has been very slow after signing in. But I didn't find any prefetch folder in my c:\windows!!! ;) :)

I've deleted this folder once but obviously it didn't return... So I tried making a prefetch folder myself, and I checked to see if the regkeys are still ok. But it doesn't seem to return no matter how many time I restart. Windows update doesn't help and I can't seem to find anyone whose had this, searching on the net.

Can anyone help me? :(
Tell me if there's anything I can do to fix this? If there are any programs that might interfere with the use of the prefetch folder.

Any help is appreciated :tazz:

I think it might have recreated itself in some other location.
Use WinXp's Search File and Folders feature to search for:
*.pf

I did a search for *.pf files, but the only place they show up is in
C:\Programfiles\Java\j2re1.4.2_08\lib\cmm

And there's only 4 files in that folder, called: ciexyz.pf, grey.pf, linear_rgb.pf, srgb.pf
I don't think this is the real prefetch folder...
I searched for hidden files as well...

Any other ideas?

Open regedit.
Goto:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters.
In the right-pane check if the value of EnablePrefetcher is 1,2, or 3.


P.S: I know u said, ucheck the registry values in Post#1, just checking if its the same registry key.

The enable prefetcher is at value 3. Yesterday I canged this from 3 back to 0 to disable it, rebooted, put it back at 3 to enable it and rebooted. But nothing changed.
Would a value of 1 or 2 be better?

3 is the best as it includes 1 and 2 both together.
Open regedit.
Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OptimalLayout.
Tell me the value of LayoutFilePath.

Also search for the Layout.ini file, this is the only file in prefetch folder which is created by default.

The only entry in OptimalLayout is (standard) with no value. Other than that it's empty, no Layoutfilepath found there.

Also there were no results for the Layout.ini file (hidden maps and folders searched).

I found this discussion:

where adamzapple claims:

Then go to START/RUN/ and TYPE IN/->cmd<-(without the arrows) CLICK OK. This will bring up the DOS Command screen.

You will need to copy and paste this entry in at the flashing cursor
-> rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks <-(without the arrows) and press ENTER.



The command I highlighted is the one that Bootvis uses to optimize boot and can be run from Start > Run as well

Maybe worth a try?

I've read the thread and followed the steps.

Works like a charm!!

It's amazing there's not much known about this. I can advise the neowin people to let that forum be indexed by google... because I had a horrible time searching for clues before posting here.
