Windows Service Pack #3 problem

I was in the Maleware forum and had a bunch of things done to fix my computer which was apparently infected, and is now fixed.

However, during these steps, at one point Windows would not start up, not even in safe mode. I had to use HP recovery. I did this, lost all of my applications, but none of my data. My version of Windows XP has reverted to a very old version. When I started updating it, things seem to be going fine until I get to Windows Service Pack #3. As soon as this is installed, I can no longer start Windows, again.

Can you get in to safe mode and uninstall SP3?
