On my Dell(not laptop) with Windows XP once after I rebooted when I got to welcome screen and tried to log on it started and for a split second I saw the background picture but then it immediately logged me off. I need to know how to log back on and prefferably be able to keep my stuff. I would like an answer that it is pretty easy and at no cost for me to do. Thank you! And PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Since you can boot to Safe Mode, while there...

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Did it work?

I am having the same problem. But I can not get into safe mode. I went into recovery console and went into system 32 and did the copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe, the exit and when it reboots, it still quickly logs me back out. I still am unable to get into safe mode too. Any suggestions? :) :)
