Windows XP Reboot Failure

Have a Compaq Presario 700. When I shut down, all goes well and am able to successfully restart. However, if I select the reboot option (or when a software installation or update requires a reboot) the computer shuts down, but hangs with a black screen on restart. Only option at that point is to power off using power button and manually power back up - which works fine. Any ideas?

Windows takes a while to shut off and reload...depending on many factors, the least of which is the size of your RAM chips, and their stability... It also has a bunch of "services" to go through...coming and going. If you can download WinPatrol, or better yet, Process Explorer, or another like program, this will give you an idea of what it is doing, and then you can shut off a few of the loading commands that you honestly feel you can live without on the reboot... no need to complicate matters... You may have to experiment a bit with this. If this does not resolve the issue, then do a sfc /scannow command on it to be sure all is well in the attic biggrin.gif Defrag and scandisk, then try again...

In most cases, it is confused and does not know just what to do sometimes, we have to give it a kick and dust off thumbsup.gif
