Hi, I have recently started having problems with my HP Pavilion desktop. I put it through a few scans for spyware and viruses but it still takes forever for it to load Windows XP. I even cleaned off the desktop of rarely used programs thinking that might free it up a bit.

I was wondering if I could still have malware or something causing it to run so slowly? What would you suggest I do to remedy the problem?

The first thing i can think of is to disable startup items and services using msconfig.

Go: Start>run>msconfig.exe>Startup Tab and uncheck all the programs you think you don't need. Same goes for the services tab

It could also be a registry issue where there are too many invalid keys, use CCleaner to clean the registry and see if it helps

Disabling some Windows services may leave computer unbootable!

Instead...

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.

Open Windows Explorer. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32. Locate msconfig.exe.
Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you right-click msconfig.exe, and then click Run as.
Click Run the program as the following user, and then type the user name, password, and domain of the administrator account that you want to use.
