Hello,

My Windows XP startup suddenly became extremely slow (a few minutes pass between the appearance of the desktop & the appearance of the taskbar). It may have something todo with a recent NewDotNet infection (AVG identified the threat as it occurred, but Ewido still found it on the hard drive afterwards).

I have tried everything in the "You Must Read This Before Posting" page. A few threats were deleted but problem remains.

Please help...

New.Net is still detected? I don't see any signs of it running here.

Your biggest problem is most likely Norton Internet Security. You have AVG already and having more than one antivirus program is just asking for trouble. Ewido is ok since it's compatible with most antivirus programs. I recommend uninstalling Norton and keeping AVG.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Install a free firewall program like ZoneAlarm (look for the free download link).

Download LSPFix http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/LSPFix.exe and run it. See if you can find any files called newdotnet...dll on the left. If so, click on it and click on the arrow to move it to the right. Click Finish and follow the prompts.

Norton Internet Security was indeed the culprit. I have removed it and the slowdown disappeared.

I have followed your other recommendations. One comment: by removing it, I learned that I do need ctfmon.exe, so I restored it. It is responsible for allowing switching between different language keyboards (in my case English & Hebrew).
