Click start then search, include hidden and system files, look for prefetch, you get one folder, open it, click edit then select all, right click any file then delete, confirm delete, reboot

If you have recently uninstalled any programmes, or have incomplete installations, Windows could stall while it searches for missing files.

Have you run disc clean up and disc defragmenter

Could you be a litle more specific, ie how long is this 'lag'. It could be that you have too many programs set to run at start up and that you are shutting down without manually closing out running programs. If you suspect malware you can post log files on the malware forum and somebody there will advise you.

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter to replace the system files, you need the XP CD and get a blue bar, when the bar goes, reboot

You cannot run sfc /scannow without the XP CD so leave things as they are
