Hi there! Just joined the forum.

I noticed my PC running slowly last night and today when i rebooted Macafee gave me an indication of C:\Windows\mgrsts.exe trying to get outbound access to the internet. I was sure this was shady because under google i found people taking about it in reference to malware. Im not sure how it got on here and to be honest i have no real idea where to start in removing this. I could delete it but i have a feeling theres a proper way to get rid of it. Any help is deeply appreciated Thanks in advance. Oh and if theres anything else that shouldnt be here could someone let me know!

Your version of HijackThis is out of date. Download the newest version, HijackThis v1.99.1.
Be sure to replace your old HijackThis.exe with this new one by saving over it.

Sorry I forgot i actually edited with thew new log but i forgot to actually change the title of the program version. So is there any thing that needs changing

you downloaded and saved the new version of HijackThis, and ran a NEW log with that?

It displays additional information that is useful to me, which I dont see contained in the above log.

Please run HijackThis version 1.99.1 and post a new log from that version

i deleted it a short while after i posted the thread. It seemed to have disappeared and i cut its access to my ports thru macafee personal firewall. Another thing do you know if its possible to change the name of the computer because it says G and i want to change it to something else? for example this: C:\Documents and Settings\G\Desktop\HijackThis.exe

thats the name of your user account

to change it, go into start > settings > control panel > user accounts

then select "change an account" and select your account. One of the options is then "change name"

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.
