Update details on problem
Here is more information:
RAM has already been checked by pulling it out of functioning computer and putting it in place of RAM that was in computer that continually went back to reboot at 1/2 way mark of Windows XP Prof. install - the RAM that was in the out of functioning computer was put in another and it functioned okay.
The CD reader was changed.
Video card has been replaced.
Have not replaced power supply, but will try that.
Unit details:
CPU - AMD Athlon xp, 1,533 (133)
Mobo - PCChips M825V
North bridge - VIA VT8375 ProSavage DRR KM266
Multimedia - VIA VT1612@VIA AC'97 enhanced audio

Any ideas before I change power supply?

What are you attempting to do?
Are you trying to boot from the hard drive? OR
Are you trying to boot from the XP CD and reinstall the operating system?

Hi Everyone
I have changed the power supply as one poster recommended, but made no difference.

Are you sure you are booting from the CD?
You should be asked "hit any key to boot from CD" or something like that.
Look HERE for a how to guide.
You said you checked memory by swapping it to another unit. You could have a problem with the ram slots on the board.
Run memtest86 (in signature) with the ram in the bad unit. If it fails, it could be ram or slots.
Try running the hard drive diagnostics of the manufacturer to see if anything comes up. (link in signature)

Hi Everyone
I have finally got the unit to accept an install program from the CD XP install disk. The problem was the using minister had played around with the CMOS unbeknown to me and this particular unit is very sensitive with respect to settings. I am providing my findings in case anyone else runs up against this particular PCCHIPS motherboard and a unit not accepting the XP install and only going half way:
UNIT PARTICULARS:
PC with a PCCHIPS motherboard M825Vxx
North Bridge – VIA VT8375 ProSavage DDR KM266
Multimedia VIA VT1612@VIA AC’97 Enhanced
CPU – AMD Athlon XP 1,800+ Mh. (133)
SOLUTION THAT WORKS AND SETTINGS THAT DO NOT WORK:
Problem with CMOS settings (Amibios Simple Setup Utility, Version 1.21.12)
Setting that works:
Type ------------------------------------------- PIO MODE 32 BIT SIZE
Primary Master USER 4 off
Primary Slave ?
Secondary Mast. CD-ROM 4 off
Secondary Slave CD-RW 4 off
Setting that do NOT work #1:
Type ------------------------------------------- PIO MODE 32 BIT SIZE
Primary Master USER 4 on
Primary Slave ?
Secondary Mast. CD-ROM 4 on
Secondary Slave CD-RW 4 on
Setting that do NOT work #2:
Type ------------------------------------------- PIO MODE 32 BIT SIZE
Primary Master AUTO 4 on
Primary Slave ?
Secondary Mast. AUTO 4 on
Secondary Slave AUTO 4 on
I hope this proves useful to another that runs into the same or similar problem.
At this time I wish to thank all for their kind assistance.
