XP doesn't recognize new Hitachi Hard Drive

I just bought a new Hitachi Deskstar 250GB hard drive and set it up as a slave. I won't be installing an operating system on it, it is just for storage.

XP isn't recognizing it. BIOS seems to be recognizing it, and the device manager is telling me that the hard drive is functioning properly....

The problem is it isn't showing up under my computer.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

It is not a USB drive.

I have not formatted or partitioned it yets. I cannot get anything other than the device manager to recognize the drive.

Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management..

When the final window opens, you should see all IDE devices on the right side.. Right click on the unformatted hdd and select "Format"..

OK that appears to be working. It is now formatting the drive, and I now see it has a drive letter assigned. Thanks a lot! Yes, I am a big dummy.

Thanks for taking the time to help.
