I have an IE problem. I think it is aboutblank, but I'm not sure. When I click on a link within an IE page, for example, a link within an email, I just get a blank page that pops up. I hourglass cursor keeps flipping, but it never stops. A .exe icon pops up in the taskbar with no info listed for about a second and goes away. This happens about every five minutes or so. The only spyware program that found anything was spysweeper. I did not pay to use the subscribed version of this program, so it only told me that I have cws-aboutblank and coolsavings, but I can not remove them in the free version. So what I did was follow the path where it said they were located. I found them in the registry and deleted them, but it did not fix my problem. I also noticed that in hijackthis, it says my home page is about:blank. I ran the cws shredder program in safe mode, but it found nothing. I am perplexed. Here is my hijackthis log. Hi rhinojonson, welcome to geekstogo.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://my.netzero.ne....5&N=PLHSOC&O=I
O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
O13 - WWW Prefix:
O13 - Home Prefix:
O13 - Mosaic Prefix:
O13 - FTP Prefix:
O13 - Gopher Prefix:

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

to do this, please click start
click My Computer
open Local Disk (C:)
open folder Program Files
open folder Updates from HP
open folder 137903
open folder Program
delete file BackWeb-137903.exe if present

After that, Reboot.

With that done, please post back with a fresh HJT log and the logs requested. Also, please let me know how things are running now and if you encountered any problems while you were following the instructions I posted.

Thanks for replying to my plea for help Taher. Unfortunately, it did not solve my problem. Both the shredder and the buster programs found nothing. Also, about buster did not have a key to update itself. The version that downloaded is 6.01. The problem may lie here. I ran the trial version of spysweeper about a week ago. Spysweeper found CWS:aboutblank. I followed the path were it was located in the registry and manually deleted it. I remember the end of it read homeold sp. It seems there are still some leftovers from this program that are doing their job. Here are the logs you asked for.Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Hello rhinojonson,

Did you by any chance back up the registry before making changes to it?

I'd like to take a look at your spysweeper log. Please:
  • Open Webroot Spysweeper.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes. If it does not prompt you, please click the "update definitions" button in the lower half of the window.
  • Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
  • Click the Sweep Options tab.
  • Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:
    • Sweep Memory
    • Sweep Registry
    • Sweep Cookies
    • Sweep All User Accounts
    • Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
    • Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
    • Sweep for Rootkits
    • Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.
  • Click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Please paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.

Unfortunately, I only was using the free version of spy sweeper, unsubscribed. After I manually deleted the cws entry in the registry, spysweeper no longer found any threats. After that I deleted it from my computer. I reinstalled it to do another sweep after reading your post, but it still didn't find anything. The free version also does not let me look at the log. So I ran the free version of adware away and here is what it found.

In the global scan
1 Running Process

C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

7 auto run programs

HKCU\run\Recordnow! =
HKLM\Run\VTTimer = VTTimer.exe
HKLM\Run\Recguard = C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\RECGUARD.EXE
HKLM\Run\PS2 = C:\WINDOWS\system32\ps2.exe
HKLM\Run\LTMSG = LTMSG.exe7
HKLM\Run\AlcxMonitor = ALCXMNTR.EXE
HKLM\ShellService\UPnPMonitor = {e57ce738-33e8-4c51-8354-bb4de9d215d1}:C:\WINDOWS\system32\upnpui.dll

2 Items in specialized remover

BroadcastPC : [Registry Key] = [Software\Softwrap]
Krepper Trojan : [Registry Value] = [Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\Windows\Run

Thanks Taher, I hope this helps

Hi rhinojonson,

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Once the computer loads, please click Start
click search
on the left-hand pane, click all files and folders
at the bottom, select more advanced options
make sure that there are check marks next to search system folders, search hidden files and folder and search subfolders
make sure all hard drives are selected
in the search bar, enter ALCXMNTR.EXE and press search.
delete anything that the search finds by right clicking on the file and choosing "delete".
please restart into normal mode.

Please download ewido anti-malware it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido anti-malware
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido anti-malware.

Please open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

With that done, please post back with a fresh HJT log and the ewido log, as well as the uninstall list as just mentioned. Thanks for your continued patience.

Also, did you by any chance back up the registry before making changes to it?

Taher, you don't have to thank me for being patient. If anybody deserves a "thank you" its you. When I ran a search for ALCXMNTR.EXE, it came up with 72 entries. It looked like some of these were drivers that were installed on the computer. What is this command for? It looks like an audio driver of some kind. Will my computer function okay without it? I do still have sound coming from the speakers. If this is an original driver on the computer, does it allow an entry for spyware? Since I had all these questions, I did save the entries in my recycle bin. Clicking on a link within an IE page is still not working, but I haven't noticed a blank exe window pop up in the taskbar since performing these actions. Here are the logs you requested.

Hi rhinojonson,

The ALCXMNTR.EXE is safe to delete. It is actually related to Realtek AC97 Audio. It's being used by Realtek to surreptitiously monitor one's actions and to gather data about customer. It's classified as malware.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Please go to Start -> Run
Then type or copy&paste the following into the space
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
click ok.
try your internet now, does the issue still occur?

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

P2P software (Limewire) is often loaded by malware and third party junk. I strongly advise removing this software. If you would rather keep Limewire, please ignore the following step in blue.

Please click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, and remove these entries (if present):

Limewire
LimeWire 4.9.30

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please click Start
click search
on the left-hand pane, click all files and folders
at the bottom, select more advanced options
make sure that there are check marks next to search system folders, search hidden files and folder and search subfolders
make sure all hard drives are selected
in the search bar, enter ALCXMNTR.EXE and press search.
delete anything that the search finds by right clicking on the file and choosing "delete".
please restart into normal mode.

With that done, please post back with a fresh HJT log and let me know if your issue is resolved.

I deleted limewire in add/remove programs. I did not find an ALCXMNTR.EXE in hijack this. I believe it has been completely erased. I emptied the recycle bin as well. All of the steps you mentioned have been completed and still I have the same symptoms. I did notice under the main section of hijack this it says that the default start page is about:blank. Here is a fresh hijack this log.

Hi rhinojonson,

Are you talking about "default start page" under the main tab of the configurations utility in hijackthis? If so, don't worry about that, that's just there in case you have to fix a hijacked start page (it'll set the start page to about:blank). Currently if your Internet Explorer, when opened, goes to about:blank, all you have to do is:

1) click tools
2) click internet options
3) under the general tab, set address: as the home page you desire
4) click apply
5) click ok

In regards to your issue, try the following:

Please go to Start -> Run
Then type or copy&paste
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
Click OK when finished

Please go to Start -> Run
Then type or copy&paste
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
Click OK when finished

Please go to Start -> Run
Then type or copy&paste
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
Click OK when finished

Please go to Start -> Run
Then type or copy&paste
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
Click OK when finished

Please go to Start -> Run
Then type or copy&paste
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
Click OK when finished

Please go to Start -> Run
Then type or copy&paste
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
Click OK when finished

Please go to Start -> Run
Then type or copy&paste
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
Click OK when finished

Try your Internet Explorer again. Does this help or does the problem remain?

Taher, you rock. My links in IE finally work again. I have spent multiple hours on the phone with technical support and they could not fix this problem. I have probably spent close to 50 hours myself trying to fix this issue to no avail. If you have the time, I would love it you explained what happened here and how you fixed it. Also how do I prevent this problem from happening again? I still get that .exe window popping up temporarily in the task bar. Is that something I should be concerned about? Also, let me know how I can help, possibly through a donation. I can't tell you grateful I am for your help.

Hi rhinojonson,

Great news! To tell you the truth one of the great helpers with this site Metallica helped me in solving this, if anyone deserves credit it's Metallica.

What I gather is that there was a problem with your Internet Explorer library, for whatever reason (corruption, deletion, etc.). And to fix it we had to manually register those dlls, which is what you did in each step of entering in the "regsvr32 xxxxx.dll". You shouldn't have this problem again, but if it occurs do the exact same thing that we just did and you should be fine.

As to the .exe window you're talking about, could you explain it a bit more in regards to:

1) how long it's there for

2) whether it occurs with firefox too or only IE

3) does it occur exactly when you open IE (as in when you open IE, two windows open instead of one, one of them being the .exe)

4) what is the window's name (what does it say on the taskbar)

5) does it occur at any time while using IE after the initial opening

Thanks in advance.

Taher, to answer your question regarding the .exe window
1. It's not an actual window like a new browser window. Its just a .exe icon that pops up in the taskbar for about a second, no more.

2. Since its not an actual browser window, I would say its Windows related. It doesn't matter if I'm using Firefox or IE.

3. I have not been able to find a pattern for when it opens. I would say its every five minutes or so.

4. It has no information written next to it. Only the .exe icon, nothing more.

I originally thought that the blank window I was getting in IE was related to this problem, but now that doesn't seem to be the case. My other thought was that this was a spyware program trying to update itself, but I don't know that for sure either. When it does pop up in the taskbar, my cursor goes to an hourglass for that second or so while it is there. I have tried looking at my taskmanager to try and find out what it is, since it has no info written next to it, but I have not been able to locate it. Thanks Taher, let me know what you think.

Hi rhinojonson,

Thanks for the information.

Your hijackthis log is clean, but let's run a few scans to see if anything comes up malware-wise.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Please post the contents of the ActiveScan report in your next post.
Thanks.
