I have read the Malware Cleaning Guide on Geeks to Go and have carefully followed all of the steps.

My computer problem appears to be caused by ad.yieldmanager.com. One manifestation of the problem is that sometimes, e.g., in Yahoo Movies, when I use the BACK arrow to navigate back to the prior page I see "http://ad.yieldmanager.com . . . " flash and disappear quickly in the status bar at the bottom of the page (so quickly that I don't have time to read the entire URL) followed just as quickly by "res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm" - although it's too fast for me to be sure of that exact URL either. The result is that a frame on the prior page that I'm navigating BACK to displays the error message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" in Internet Explorer 7, or a similar message in FireFox. Those frames on the prior pages did not previously contain an error.
These messages sometimes also come up for an entire page, not just a frame, when I'm attempting to navigate to a particular webpage. In those cases I have verifed using another computer that the webpages exist. I can see no discernable pattern as to why I can successfully display some webpages and frames and not others.

Hi Ahimsa,

1) Disable Ad-Aware

• Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray
• At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called Active and Automatic
• Uncheck both of those boxes

Remember to re-enable protection after you've been declared clean!

2) Update Java and Adobe Reader

• Download JavaRa to your Desktop and Unzip it into its own folder
• Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select
• Click Remove Older Versions
• Accept any prompts
• A log will appear (JavaRa.log), please post the contents of that log in your next reply
• Open JavaRa.exe again and click Search For Updates
• Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search
• Click on the Open Webpage button
• Download and install the latest Java Runetime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
  
  Click here and update your version of Adobe Reader.

3) Uninstall Programs

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
Please go Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

• Freecorder

Optional Removals
Freecorder Toolbar is a Conduit/EffectiveBrand "Free Community" toolbar. Some Conduit toolbars are reputed to have a certain adware/trackware functionality.

Please note any other programs that you don't recognize in that list in your next response.
After removing the programs, please reboot back into normal mode.

4) HijackThis
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

If you removed Freecorder above, remove the entries that are coloured orange in HiJackThis.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

5) RunScanner

• Please download RunScanner to your Desktop and run it
• When the first page comes up, select Beginner Mode
• On the next page select Save a binary .run file (Recommended) then click Start full scan at the top
• RunScanner.exe may request access to the internet at this time through your firewall, please allow it to do so, it will run for two or three minutes
• On completion it will ask for a location to save the file and a name for both the .Run file and the Log file
• Call the .Run file RScanner.run and save it on your Desktop
• Upload RScanner.run using the attachement system with your next post

Thank you very much for helping me. Here’s what I have done in each of the steps you outlined.
(1) “Disable Ad-Aware”
There is no Ad-Watch icon in the system tray. I use the Free version of Ad-Aware, which does not contain Ad-Watch. If I click on Ad-Watch in the Ad-Aware menu I get the message “Please perform a software upgrade to retrieve Ad-Watch 2008.” So, I uninstalled Ad-Aware instead.
(2) “Update Java and Adobe Reader”
Done. The JavaRa log is posted below. I have installed Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and Adobe Reader 9.0.0.
(3) “Uninstall Programs”
Done. I have uninstalled Freecorder and Freecorder Toolbar in Safe Mode.
(4) “HijackThis”
I have removed all of the entries that you requested, except for the one involving Virtuagirl2 because I wanted to check with you first. (I did remove the one involving Virtuagirl HD.) If I remove the Virtuagirl2 entry does it only prevent it from opening at startup and appearing in the system tray? I would still like to be able to run the program manually. I don’t allow the program to access the internet.
(5) “Run Scanner”
Done. I have attached the RScanner.run file and posted a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi Pat,
Checking it will only remove it from startup. You don't need to check it - I've included instructions below for restoring VirtuagirlHD if you'd like it to still run at startup. You can use the same instructions for Virtuagirl2 if you've removed that.

How's your computer running?

1) Restoring HJT Backups

• Open HijackThis
• Click on View the list of Backups
• Place a check mark next to:
  • O4 - Startup: VirtuaGirl HD.LNK = C:\Program Files\vghd\vghd.exe
  • O4 - Startup: VirtuaGirl2.lnk = C:\Program Files\Vg\VirtuaGirl2.exe
• Click Restore
• Click Yes
• Reboot your computer

2) RunScanner

• Download the attached .Run File (this is your RunScanner file fixed by me)
  •  RScanner_For_Ahimsa.run ( 207.56K ) Number of downloads: 3
    
• Save it to your Desktop and then double click the RunScanner Icon. This will start RunScanner
• There will be several entries in Red and in Blue
• Click the button at the top labeled Fix Selected Items
• Accept the warning(s) and repeat until they are all gone
• Reboot your computer

3) OTMoveIt2

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.

• Save it to your desktop.
• Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
• Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

• Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
• Click the red Moveit! button.
• A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
• Close OTMoveIt2

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

4) Kaspersky Scan

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner
Kaspersky online scanner uses JAVA technology to perform the scan. If you do not have the latest JAVA version, please download the latest version from here.

• Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
• It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
• When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
• Make sure the following is checked.
  
  Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  Archives
  Mail databases
• Click on My Computer under Scan.
• Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
• You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
• Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
• Please post this log in your next reply.

Hi Pat,

Regarding your question about Spybot Search and Destroy, the registry entry relates to Local Machine Zone Lockdown and the information bar that pops up in Internet Explorer. It should be safe to leave it alone.

Also, I've updated my instructions in my previous post ^.
