bulleting problem in office, tab key not creating sub-bullets

I'm proficient with Word, however, when creating bullets and trying to TAB into a sub bullet, instead of auto-pushing the the sub bullet, it just spaces over. I have to hit the indention button for a sub bullet to show up.
