don't know virus name/ can't open any files or downloads, ever

I have no idea what virus i picked up,but all of my icns on my desktop have been converted to windows media player files. I tried to download avg antivirus but every download / file is being dircted to windows med.player. I use this pc for work and I cant open any of the files or programs i need. this is a new laptop (two weeks old )and i had not downloaded an antiviral yet; any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
