I visited one bad (evil) site in the last few days and can't seem to clean up the damage. Can someone help? The symptoms are that my IE home page keeps changing, I keep getting a popup (http://eager-search....p?q=phentermine) and can't surf anywhere in IE getting this message:

"You cannot access this site due to following reason:
Your computer was infected by Spyware or Adware Software.
This is dangerous software which disclose your personal
and transferred data and/or display unsolices advertising.
You can use this ADWARE/SPYWARE REMOVAL tools in
order to solve this problem and prevent futurer infection.

You can click Search to look for information on the Internet.
HTTP Error - Access Blocked "

I've run all the utilities listed in the "do this first" post except that I can't run the online scans (Trend because I can't use IE so am using Mozilla and it doesn't download the plugin correctly, and Panda because it needs IE and I can't use IE). I first ran Ad-aware and it found CoolWebSearch. I removed that but have done so before and if I run it again it'll be back. I ran CWShredder multiple times and it finds no issues. I have AVG and it runs clean on its scan. My HijackThis log is below. Please help!

Please disable Spybot's Teatimer while we are working on this. Don't forget to turn it back on once you are clean.

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE
C:\Windows\explorer32dbg.exe
C:\Windows\iexplore_dbg.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

After the reboot copy the part below into notepad and save it as unhko.reg

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{4947DDCC-D549-4D0B-9685-AA58B20E9642}]

"Debugger"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplorer.exe]
"Debugger"=-

Doubleclick the file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Then run HijackThis again and check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://default.home
O2 - BHO: XMLDP Class - {60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B} - C:\WINDOWS\xmllib.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SMSSU] C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tmntsrv32] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE

Reboot once more and post a new HijackThis log.

Thanks for the guidance. I got through to the part of rebooting after the Killbox stuff. My PC comes up with my wallpaper but nothing else - no taskbar, no desktop icons. I had to go into task manager and browse to Mozilla just to be able to get here. I assume this was not expected?

Please finish the rest of the instructions.

The desktop is opened with explorer.exe
We have removed the file that "debugger" points to.
That is probably responsible for the empty desktop.

Let me know.

~Reminder to myself to rewrite the following order of the procedure~

OK, the desktop is back now. I can't run IE at this point to see if things are fixed, getting the message "Windows cannot find (null). Make sure you typed the name correctly..."

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://default.home
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B} - (no file)

Then reboot. Do you still get that error when you try to start IE?

I did some more research in the meantime.

Copy the part below into notepad and save it as fullstop.reg

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\ATLASSstp]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\HTASSstp]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\MSMsgSvc]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\SEHLPstp]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\WTLBAstp]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.exe]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\BHOASS.BHDP]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\BHOASS.BHDP.1]

Doubleclick the file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Your log looks good, so all we need to do is get IE up and running again.
