Dear Malware Moderators,
I have done all the steps that you have requested, in order and hopefully I'm providing all pertinent information.

Through Panda, I aparently have a virus...Eicar.mod

My main issue at the start of this was the PostUpdate.exe file that is now an icon on my desk top tray (where the time is) that says it's "Shockwave Updater". However, nothing happens when I click on it, nor can I right click it to delete it and it's in the system 32 files (i don't even know what that really means). My own research has shown that some say this is legit, some say not.

So I post all the info I have gathered via your instructions, and hope for the best!
Thank you in advance for time and advice.

Below is my Hijack this file, but also you asked for (in the do this before posting a hijack file) the active scan results and the super spyware results.

Carmen
Please help by explaining any instructions very simply, as if I don't know anything about computers.

And I noticed that there was a lot of "porn related" ad stuff...where does this come from???? I'm the only one who uses this comp, and i don't go there! I do however download and/or watch a lot of videos, music and teleclass recordings etc.

Hello Carmen,

Sorry for the delay.

Before we proceed to clean your computer from malware, let's go over some points that will help both me and you, and prevent causing damage to your computer:
  • Please don't be afraid to ask questions! smile.gif No question is considered dumb here. It's better to be safe than sorry!
  • Please follow the steps excatly in the same order posted. If you can't perform a certain step, or you're unsure on what to do, please stop and let me know.
  • NEVER fix anything in HijackThis or other programs on your own! This can be very dangerous and cause harm to your system. If you witness a certain entry or program you're unsure about, please don't hesitate to ask! thumbsup.gif
Step1 : VundoFix

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Step2 : Correcting entries with HijackThis

Please re-open HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to the following entries presented in the window: (Do NOT click Fix yet!)

O1 - Hosts: 127.127.127.127 elite
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [SWHelper] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Shockwave 10\PostUpdate.exe" 1014020
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZS

Now, close all other windows but HijackThis, including Explorer windows (folders) and this window, and click Fix. Note: It is vital you close all other windows, otherwise the fix will not succeed.

Restart your computer.

Step2 : CWShredder & Deleting file

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Once CWShredder has finished fixing, please navigate to the following folder, and delete the following rogue file, marked in bold: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Shockwave 10\PostUpdate.exe - right click it and choose Delete.

Restart your computer & it will go back into Normal Mode.

Step3 : Scanning with DSS

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.Note: It's likely that the two logs won't fit into one post. If so, please post extra.txt in a seperate post.
Summary

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • VundoFix log;
  • DSS main.txt and extra.txt (Note that they may not fit into one post, so you may want to post them in two separate posts);
  • Please tell us if you use the program called CyberNation.com installed on your PC, and are you aware of its existence on your computer?

Hi Landlord,
I've done step one, with success I think so far. (no files found for Vundo Fix) and HIjack done to specs...PostUpdate is gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! smile.gif

Step 2
I tried to downlad the CW Shredder from your link but IE couldn't get the page.
So I googled CW Shredder and downloaded it from the Trend Micro site, just the stand alone version of CW Shredder.
I put it directly on my desk top...you said save to it's own folder. (mistake number 1 perhaps)

I ran it and of course my instant firewall maker came on when I hit the update button and automatically made a rule for it. And then it said..
"unable to check for updates."

I finally remembered where to go to fix that....my Norton Personal Firewall, configure, and I changed the setting from automatic to permit all.
(I use AVG for my virus scans, Norton stuff comes automatically with my cable connection to the internet and is used for creating firewall rules, additional pop up blocker crap, email thru the cable providers email service, and anti spyware - havn't run that one in a while. I do not have Norton Virus installed on the computer..i don't think so anyway...it says that I don't)

Closed CWShredder, opened it again, clicked update and it came back again with
"unable to check for updates."

So that's where I am right now...unable to check for updates in CW Shredder.

Patiently Awaiting instructions
carmen

oh and THANK YOU! biggrin.gif

Hey Carmen,

Yes, I am familiar with Rogers' Security Suite - it comes with Yahoo Anti Spyware which is based on another anti-spyware product. Let's try performing the clean-up without updating CWShredder, as the CWS (CoolWebSearch) found on your PC is quite old and CWShredder might be able to take care of it without updating.

Go ahead and repeat the instructions given in my previous post regarding CWShredder, but ignore the update part. Remember to delete the file mentioned and include the DSS logs in your next reply smile.gif

Hi Landlord,
okay,
I've done everything as asked and here are the results...

1. Vundo came up with nothing
2. in Highjack-safe mode - I did whaqt you asked.
3. CW Shredder came up with nothing (I unblocked the program..from right click - properties, and realized that the reason I probably couldn't get updates is because I had downloaded the most current version..duh)
4.deleted PostUpdate in safe mode
5.here is the dss main file, extra will be in next post right after this.

Cybernation is a known program on my computer..it's a qutation library...please don't tell me that this is bad program.
However I think "my web search" is a not very nice program...I think I got it from those smiley's things, I couldn't get rid of it.
And nothing came up about eicar.mod...which Panda picked up with their free scan.

okay main dss main file...
