hello all, ive recently had a problem with my girlfriends laptop, it has shut down when i switch on it gets to the windows page and the reboots after that in asks if i want to run windows with 30 seconds next to it to except, the error code is 0x00000024, wich i have looked up on the net and more or less know what needs to be done, so i have opend the recovery console and chhosen to repair then i have chosen c/windows system now it is asking me for the admin password which low and behold my lovely girlfriend has forgotton! any ideas how i can carry on repairing the system and by passing the password or extracting the passwrod so i can carry on. any help would be much appriciated cheers

ok sorry about that i was having a dumb moment i dont need the password, just press enter, ive tried the commands
o resolve this issue, use the Windows Recovery Console to extract a new copy of the Kernel32.dll file from the original Windows XP CD. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Start the Recovery Console. If you do not have the Recovery Console installed, start it from the Windows XP CD. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Insert the Windows XP CD, and then restart the computer. If you are prompted, select any options that are required to start from the CD.
b. When the text-based part of the Setup program starts, follow the instructions that appear on your screen. To select the repair or recover option, press R.
c. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the recovery console.
d. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password.
2. At the command prompt, type cd system32, and then press ENTER.
3. Type ren kernel32.dll kernel32.old, and then press ENTER.
4. Type map, and then press ENTER.
5. Note the drive letter that is assigned to the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD. It is appears in a format that is similar to the following format:

D: \Device\CdRom0


6. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
expand drive\i386\kernel32.dl_
Where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD). For example, type:
Expand d:\i386\kernel32.dl_
Note Include the underscore character after the "L" in Kernel32.dl_.

You receive the following message:

Kernel32.dll
1 file(s) expanded.
and no luck it tells me that the commands are incorrect, any ideas pleas

1. Restart your computer, and keep tapping F8 during the initial start-up until you get options, select Safe Mode with a Command Prompt then press enter.

2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.

3. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.

Look for the most recent system checkpoint created before the errors to restore from

Boot to safe mode and try this

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD

Windows File Protection will show an on screen blue progress bar which will simply disappear when the scan is complete, reboot when it does

If you do not have an XP CD you can borrow a same version as was originally installed XP CD, if you downloaded SP2 then you need an SP1 XP CD

Possibly, you will need to press the power button and keep tapping the delete key, (possibly F2) until the PC enters set up. Change the boot order to CD ROM Drive then hard drive, press F10 then press enter, load the XP CD then type Y then press enter, as it reboots, look for press any key to load from CD, press enter

You will need your XP product key to complete this

The XP Product Key is a 25 character alpha numerical code, which does not include the sequence OEM

If you have audio / video files which are subject to DRM you should check with the provider for known issues with performing an XP repair install

thanks for your info keith much appriciated, only thing on the first part though is that i cant go in to sayfe mode or any other mode, it will only open up the recovery console from the cd! i will give the second option. and let you know how it goes, cheers

ok tried your links were a great help but unfortunatly no joy when istalling with xp cd to repair i get=
to set up windows xp on the selected item press enter
to create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press c
to delete the selected partition, prees d

no option for repair. if i install i think i will lose all my docs which are quiet important, any ideas how i can make a copy of all the stuff on my laptop?

First screen press enter

Then Press F8

Then Press R for repair

As long as you see those, it's fine, if it wants to create a partition or anything else, cancel and post back

ok no luck. i have

c: partition1 (ntfs) 57232 mb 15527 mb free

at the bottom i have enter=install d=delete f3=quit

followed your instructions right the way through to this point but no repair option.

At which point does it differ and not follow enter - F8 - press R

it differs after f8 which is the the second window the third window is as above, no option of r.

thanks, ive had a look through it and its warning people with ome and im not sure if thats on my laptop, its an hp compaq nx6110
also i have errors on coming up when switching on its only when i go in to advanced options that i get a blue screen with the error 0x00000024. im at my wtis end cos ive been here for 6 hours trying to find ifo and trying differnt things with no luck lol. also it says on the microsoft page that it might not restore fully, and i cant loes anything on the pc....

Did you try safe mode with command prompt, wholly different to safe mode

ive just quit to start from the beggining and its now gone into another stage lol its come up with a blue screen and is checking the system archives in c and after the disc.
correcting error inindex $0 for archive 45602 (this window is when you dont shut down windows correctly and switch on again) not sure whats happening lol

Let that run, see how it is

ok will let it run for another 5 min and post back ok, it seems to have stalled and not going any further, should i reboot? will post back in 5 min cheers, oh and merry xmas!
