Thanks for your reply.

I have a problem here -- IE on my laptop has been hijacked and I cannot access internet (per your instruction). I'm currently using another computer to access geekstogo.com.

Is there a software that I can download to clean up my laptop?

Let's try this instead.

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log and the log from Ewido.

As per your advice, I used Ewido and scanned for all infections. It did the trick and removed a wholebunch of viruses, spyware, etc.

Similar to the results I got before with Anti-Aware and others, what we did seemed to be a quick-fix only. It appears that every time I use IE, all viruses, adware would come back again.

After I ran Ewido on my laptop, I was able to connect to the internet using IE (if you recall, I couldn't even access the internet before Ewido scan), I did a Panda Activescan as well -- not surprisingly, it came up with 20+ Adware "incidents" again.

Below you'll find Activescan log and the latest hijackthis log. Please help me....

At this point, I don't have too many important docs on my IBM laptop and the frustration level is getting higher and higher.... I don't mind reformatting the entire drive and "reset to factory setting", however, I've tried this before and the problems still exist (did IBM install one of the infected file on this computer?) . Would it be easier if I just take my brother's laptop (identical model) and "duplicate" a hard drive (is this even doable, technically?)?

Oh no. We're no where near desperate enough to consider a format yet. Stick with me, we'll get you fixed up.

Please follow these steps:
  • Please make sure that you can View Hidden Files
    • Click Start -> My Computer
    • Select Tools -> Folder options
    • Select the View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled.
    • Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked.
    • Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
    • Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked
    • For more info on how to show hidden files click here.

  • Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

  • Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
    • If you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

  • Once in Safe mode, delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

    C:\drsmartload1.exe
    C:\mc-110-12-0000246.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\uninstall_nmon.vbs
    C:\windows\gimmygames.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\myupdates.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\uninstall_nmon.vbs
    C:\WINDOWS\winsysupd4.exe
    C:\Program Files\Network Monitor <-- delete this folder
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SBUtils <-- delete this folder

  • Delete your temp files
    • Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
      • Open the Temp folder
      • Select Edit -> Select All
      • Select Edit -> Delete(or press the delete button on your keyboard) to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
    • Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.
      • Open the Prefetch folder
      • Select Edit -> Select All
      • Select Edit -> Delete(or press the delete button on your keyboard) to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
    • Click Start -> Run and type %temp% in the Run box.
      • Select Edit -> Select All
      • Select Edit -> Delete(or press the delete button on your keyboard) to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
    • Click Start -> Control Panel -> Internet Options.
      • Select the General tab
      • Under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
      • Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
      • Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
      • Click Apply then OK.
    • Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.

There is a file that I am suspicious of that we need to check out.
  • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan" box on the top of the page:

    • C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winsdc32.dll

  • Disable your firewall if you are using one.
  • Click on the submit button
  • Reenable your firewall as soon as you get results.
  • Please post the results in your next reply.

Please post the results of the jotti scan and a new hijackthis log.

Thanks again, Sam, you're giving me hope at least.

I'm on a business trip now and will return home on Friday. Will follow your advice and perform those procedures as soon as I get back.

Many thanks.

Did everything as you had suggested.

Good news -- I can finally use IE to access internet again.
Bad news -- a number of Spyware/viruses etc. were spotted when I used Jotti to scan C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winsdc32.dll

I had a feeling that one was up to no good.

Please fix this line with Hijackthis.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winsdc32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winsdc32.dll

Delete this file.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winsdc32.dll

If you get an error, try it in safe mode.

Run a new scan with Panda and post the resulting log along with a new hijackthis log.

After removing winsdc32.dll, I ran a Panda scan. Looks like we still have problems, although as I mentioned before, I can now at least use IE to access the Internet.

Pls see scan log and the latest HJT log below.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\drsmartload2.dat
    C:\Program Files\csaa\srai.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Start Menu\Programs\UCmore - The Search Accelerator\How To Uninstall.lnk
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Start Menu\Programs\UCmore - The Search Accelerator\UCmore Tour.lnk
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\oins.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\winsysupd5.exe
    C:\winsysban5.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

I followed your advice and appeared to be on the right track... Everything was fine until I restarted the computer and used IE to access Internet -- Problems seem to re-occur.

I re-ran a panda scan and it came up with a bunch of things found. Please Help....

Here's the Panda scan results:
