Hi guys,
Be gentle will ya', I'm a card-carrying geezer, with no understanding of computers! I'm still amazed that my telephone has no wires leading to the wall! (To get an idea of my technical knowledge, set your watch back 40 years)

My question- Can I do without fssm32.exe? It seems to be taking up more room than anything on my system! This is my first day on "Geeks To Go" and I see that other folks have similar issues, but I don't understand the "fixes". What does "Hijack This" mean? My problems eased a lot when I started using Firefox, but I still have trouble when I open links. It takes too long, or freezes up, but with IE, it was total disaster! Where do I start?
Grateful for any suggestions, cg

fssm32.exe is a valid file and part of your F-Secure security program and if it is taking up too much room then it is likely that it is fighting an infection.

What does "Hijack This" mean?
it is a program we use to scan various parts of a computer to start the search for malware. and we will be downloading it and running it now for me to analyse.

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

topic re-opened, user still here.

ok, lets use another program which is somewhat more straight-forward to use........

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
  • It is important that is saved to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

The text from these files may exceed the maximum post length for this forum. Hence, you may need to post the information over 2 or more posts.
