Go to Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.

Select the Delete on reboot option.

In the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking the 'Delete File' button (red circle with a white X) after pasting:

C:\wp.exe

It will prompt you to reboot, press the NO button. Instead, copy and paste the following and click the 'Delete File' button again:

C:\wp.bmp

When it prompts you to reboot this time, press the NO button again and repeat the process on all these files until the last one has been entered then press the YES button:

C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

If you recieve an error message "PendingRenameOperation...." and your computer doesn't restart, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way):

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop. Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

Click the "Go" button and it will take you into the "Policies" folder. Locate the "System" folder (in the right panel), if found, right-click on the System folder and go to Delete

Be very careful that you only delete the System folder that is inside the Policies folder.

Reboot your computer again.

Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

Download this file to your desktop. Click HERE. Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Click here to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. You will be prompted to reboot, do so. Repeat for all log-in accounts on your computer.

Post a new HiJackThis log here when done.

Yes, that's because we've not finished yet. You are running HijackThis from the Desktop; please create a new folder for it and move the program into the new folder

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

There are still shortcuts on the desktop for "online pharmacy" and "spyware removal". Can these just be deleted or are there other steps to take? Thanks for the help so far :tazz:

This one is still there:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsFY] c:\wp.exe

Fix with HJT as before. Have you tried deleting those short cuts? Download and run Silent Runners.vbs from HERE

It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread

One more scan. Click here to download eScan's mwav application. Double-click it to run it, select all local drives, scan all files, press 'scan' and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane. Highlight it, CTRL C and paste it in your next reply.

It's not too bad. Start Killbox and click on Tools->Delete Temp Files. When that finishes, copy and paste each of the following lines into the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each. Keep track of any files it tells you either could not be found or could not be deleted, as you'll need those later:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\load.exe
C:\WINDOWS\msstasks.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mstasks1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system.exe

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, in the killbox again this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

Reboot if it doesn't do so automatically. Post a final HJT log and let me know how it is running now.

Is there any need to worry about all the virus logs posted in MWAV. Obviously some of those logs contain files which have been quarantined in PC Cillin. What would you recommend as the best antivirus/malware software?

There's no need to worry about those files - you have removed the harmful ones.

The AV you have is good, there's no need to change unless you are having issues with it. You must keep it up to date however otherwise you are wasting your time.

Let me know if everything is running OK and I will close the topic.

System is running fine thanks very much for your help. Probably the most useful site I've visited. Even my IP uses this site. Keep up the good work. Cheers. :tazz:

You're welcome - glad to help :tazz:

To help keep you clean follow the recommendations in Tony's article here:

So how did I get infected in the first place?
