how to install an os on my laptop, dont know hoe to install an os dosent cd

i got a dell latitude cs laptop it had an hd clean and i turn it on and it says diskette drive 0 seek failure no boot sector on hard disk strike f1 to retry boot,f2 for setup utility i got an external cd drive and when i put the xp cd in it does nothing the external cd drive is hooked in the parallel port.this cord is for a floppy disk but i have it hooked to a cd rom it opens and the cd spins but would that be my problem would i need to get a media cable.somebody please help me soon as possable .thanks

Hello hidden Shadow

check that the first boot device in your system BIOS is set to the CD-ROM Drive.

( To find out how to access the BIOS please refer to your motherboard manual or the manufacturer of your Laptop. (The system bios can usually be entered on boot, usually by pressing the F1 or F10 or DEL key for a Dell Make sure you save the settings before exiting))

Once the PC boots to the XP Disk the setup should start.

yeah i tried that then it says diskette 0 seek failure
no boot sector on hard disk -
strike f1 to retry boot,f2 for setup utility
i think i need a media cable because the cable i got i think its reading the cd drive as a floppy drive but thanks for your help desiredfx
