Just bought a new hard drive (SATA) and encountered a problem while trying to install XP. Well when I put the Windows XP CD, and when Windows asks for the path to install XP, I can't see the new drive. It's just the old drive that was there. Where's the new SATA drive? Help please? Thanks! |

Howdy:
Is the old hdd an IDE or SATA as well? Now, when you boot the system using your XP cd, you will bee a screen that says something like "Press F6 to install Raid/SCSI drivers". You need to do this in order to install the SATA controller drivers so XP can see/find the drive. Murray |

Thanks for the reply Murray.
The old one is an IDE Drive. Would I have boot problems if the IDE is still connected while I install XP on the SATA drive? Because I heard that some people that have certain mobos are having some problems on booting to the SATA drive. They said that the boot.ini (or whatever it is) is on their old IDE drive (which was made on their first XP installlation) so they can't boot to the SATA. Do I need to unplug the IDE drive and then install XP on SATA? or I can just easily change the first boot thru BIOS? My MoBo btw is an ECS Elitegroup http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Products/...=44&LanID=0 And when I browsed the Drivers CD (came with my MoBo) I can see the RAID folder which I guess has the drivers that I have to put on floppy so windows can read the SATA drive. However, I don't know which files I need to put on a floppy disk?? Here's a screenie of the contents of the RAID folder: ![]() My quick guess is the "FloppyImage" folder, but when I open it I get these folders, now not sure which: ![]() Thanks for your time. The drivers should be there then. Press F^ to enable them and install.
Once you get XP installed on the Sata drive, you shouyld be able to dual boot. Are you going to remove the IDE drive after the install? Is this a new XP cd or the original? I ask it you would be walking a grey line installing it twice and having it installed on two seperate harddrives. Murray |

Thanks again,
QUOTE The drivers should be there then. Press F^ to enable them and install. Those files are in the CD that came with the Motherboard. So I don't need to put them on a floppy disk? When I press F6, I will remove the "XP install disk" and then put the "Mobo Disc" (which contains the drivers). Can I do that? QUOTE Is this a new XP cd or the original? I ask it you would be walking a grey line installing it twice and having it installed on two seperate harddrives. I only have the original. Do I need to buy a new xp disk? |

I had a typo there.. That should be F6 NOT F^.
As for the IDE drive, what are you planning to do with it? There is a good chance the drivers are already there. Just try loading XP. Murray |

I'm planning to keep the IDE drive as a temporary extra space.
The reason why I bought a new drive is because I'm transferring some old VHS to DVD and I need a lot of space. So I guess since the old one is still working, I'll save the videos there for now at least it have some use before i throw it. - QUOTE There is a good chance the drivers are already there. Oh ok. So windows will use the drivers inside my old IDE drive so it can detect the new SATA and install windows on it. Got it. I'm going to try this now. Thanks again! |

It did not work.
I guess you misunderstood my previous posts. I'm sorry. Ok, so I press F6 during the installation process of XP. And it showed a screen, press S to load the drivers etc. etc. So I pressed "S", and it asked for the drivers. Says: insert driver floppy to drive A:, which is the floppy drive i guess. - So I guess I really need the RAID drivers to be in a floppy disk. But I don't know which files I need to put on the floppy, that was what I was asking before. When I open the RAID drivers folder (from within the Motherboard CD) it shows me these: (screenshot:) ![]() As you can see there are many of them, and I'm not sure which one I need. Which folder (driver) do I need to put on a floppy? =========== // EDIT // I reasearched while I'm waiting for your reply and I just found out that we should just use a RAID driver when we have a 2 parallel SATA drives, which in my case is not. I just have one SATA drive. So I guess this is not the driver I need? Getting confused now. This post has been edited by diop: Nov 22 2007, 11:27 PM |

Okay.
First, do you have a floppy drive on that system? Secondly, you need the SATA controller drivers. What is the make and model of your system? Murray |
