hello all,

here's the problem.

thanx to some idiot trojan horse the laptop from a friend of mine wont start up anymore, somekind of loop it's in.
safe mode also does not work anymore.

he is still able to get in dos mode.
there are still some photos he would like to recover before he has to do a format and reinstall.

is there a way to do this?
can we still get them onto a cd or a external drive or something?

any help would greatly be appriciated,

your best bet would be to pull the hard drive from the computer and put it in a usb drive enclosure (very easy to get)....then hook it up to a working computer and copy the files off that way

as a word of warning...since you KNOW it's infected...it's possible to transfer that infection with the files (though any method would give you the same chance of infection) so make sure that you only connect to a computer with a well configured AV software and do a manual scan on the external drive as soon as you connect it.

is it perhaps possible to create another partition in dos and copy the files to the new partition?

then reinstall winxp , the AV and run the check from there?

of course it's possible...just not the easiest method

all you'd need to do is use the mkdir command to make a new directory then use either xcopy or cp to move the files....the problem is that if you leave the files on the drive that's not working...and that's the only place they exist...then there's a chance that you'll lose them during the windows install
