A while back, my iTunes just mysteriously wouldn't open. I know many other people with this problem, but something seems different about mine. I've narrowed it down to two processes that are killing it. One is ywpcpp.exe and pxoj.exe. I've tried disabling them using the System Configuration Utility, but after a little while, they respawn. Attached is a jpeg file. The highlighted process is the spawned version, the unchecked ones are the ones I had already disabled before the reboot. I've tried going into dos and deleting the ywpcpp.exe file, and it deletes, but I can't seem to find the pxoj file with the path specified from MSCONFIG. Any ideas on how to get rid of it? (I would have posted a hijack this log but it said I wasn't able to upload a .txt file extension I guess.. )

When I went to delete the file, it said it was already gone. (I had used the uninstaller from the makers of XCP, and noticed that those processes were still there while talking with one of the people with the Freedom to Tinker blog) The scan found nothing as well. Are the ywpcpp.exe and pxoj.exe files that I showed in the screen shot associated with the rootkit stuff?

No, that is something different that you have.

First we need to download and prepare some tools that we will need to fix your problem.
  • Please download Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
      • Install background guard
      • Install scan via context menu
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
      • Then click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
    • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
    Ewido Manual Updates

  • Please download Adaware SE 1.06
Install Adaware and check for updates, but don't run it yet.

  • Please download CleanUp 4.0
Install CleanUp, but don't run it yet.

==============

Now that you have the right tools we can start fixing your problem.

Please make sure that you can View Hidden Files

Please print out these instructions as the rest of this fix must be done in Safe mode and you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

=============

Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:
  • Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

  • Delete these files (Do not be concerned if they do not exist);

    C:\WINDOWS\dfkadll.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\qutjsvc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\exp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ywpcpp.exe

  • Now run CleanUp
    IMPORTANT!
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

    Running CleanUp
    • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
    • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
    • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
    • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
      • Delete Cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
      • Empty Recycle Bins
      • Delete Prefetch files
      • Cleanup! All Users
    • Click OK
    • Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
    • When asked to reboot system select No
    • Close CleanUp

  • Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove everything that it finds.

  • Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop.
    • Close Ewido.

  • Reboot back into normal mode.

  • Please run this online virus scan - Panda Virus Scan
    • Make sure it is set to clean automatically.
    • There may be files that this scan will not remove. Please save that information to include in your next post.

  • Reboot your computer and post the following information in your next reply:
    • A new Hijackthis log
    • The Ewido log
    • The log from Panda online virus scan
Let me know how things are running and what problems you are still having.

Right now I'm sitting here letting the Panda scan run, although I doubt it'll do any good. The XCP service popped back up again, and there's still a listing of the ywpcpp.exe and pxoj.exe startup items in the System Configuration Utility. Anything and everything that I have tried has failed, and the things have just replicated. The only time anything at all comes close to working is when I disable them in the System Config. but they eventually replicate, usually after I reboot. AGH!!!

As soon as the Panda scan finishes, I'll post that log as well.

I see the problem. When you disable startup items from running it doesn't get rid of them, but it does keep those entries from being seen by Hijackthis log. So we're not seeing the info that we need to see.

Download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

I've been having some major problems with my computer running slow and having a lot of left over stuff from programs, and was talking with my cousins (who are techies), and I'm just going to wipe the hard drive and start over. Although I do have a question about that- how would I go about doing such a thing, and will that keep the BIOS and the basic stuff to be able to boot Windows from my CD? We just semi discussed this, and I haven't taken a look around the computer yet to see if there is any function on there to erase everything.

and here is the Panda log (Something interesting- it gives a name to the spyware I have...QoolAid)

I'm disappointed because you don't seem to have major problems that would require that drastic of a step. I look at formatting and reinstalling as an absolute last resort. But if that's the way you want to go, here is some more info on how to accomplish that.

http://support.micro...om/?kbid=313348

Now if you want to proceed, the WinPFind log will show the qoologic trojan files and registry entries that we need to remove as well as anything else that's hiding. That's why I wanted to see it.
Just in case you do, this would be the next step based off what I see in your Panda log.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\pxoj.exe
    C:\Program Files\adlcontrolcomp.xml
    C:\quar\ywpcpp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\preprocess.data
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SearchHook.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\InstallerV3.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nsdDD.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\qpwkw.dat
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xbox31.ico
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ywpcpp.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

If you decide you still want some help, please post the log from WinPFind and we'll take care of the rest of it.

I recently just ran another microsoft anti-spyware scan in safe mode that cleared out like 130 some odd instances of it, and I deleted the quarantine file as well while I was at it since I noticed that the other scans were picking up on it there, so if it comes back again I'll do that. Right now I doubt the files exist (Or at least I hope they don't! lol)

Hopefully it's all fixed now. Thank you SO much for your help!

(I ended up finding out I didn't have enough blank cds to back up any of my personal files, and not enough room on my iPod to back them up either, so I can't start over on my hard drive at this moment. I'm going to just build my own computer in the future and leave the problems on this one to my parents, since this isn't the only thing that is wrong with it. :-P)
