iexplore.exe failed to initialize properly [RESOLVED]

I have recently suspected I have received a hijack attack whilst using Internet Explorer. After reading several posts I have run a HijackThis log and attached it below. As there seemed to be varying fixes I would greatly appreciate some assistance in being pointed in the right direction. The full Error I am receiving when trying to open IE is "iexplore.exe The Application Failed to Initialize Properly (0xc0000005)."

Hello,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
O2 - BHO: NavErrRedir Class - {00D6A7E7-4A97-456f-848A-3B75BF7554D7} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Go to start > run and copy and paste next line in the field and click OK:

regedit /a C:\backupkey.reg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RPCKDM

Then open notepad and and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RPCKDM]


Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the regfix must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Reboot and open your Internet Explorer.
Let me know if that solved the problem.

That worked fine. Thanks for your assistance. I do have a question for you though, if you don't mind? Could you explain how the REGEDIT4 registry fix works. Sorry if this is a bit off topic.

Hi,

Here's a small tutorial on the REGEDIT part:

In your case, I let you backup the key that was causing the problems. (This one is now present on your C:\ with the name backupkey.reg
If you click that file, it will import the key again and causing the problem again. But it is always better to create a backup first in case something fails.

Then I let you make a regkey to delete the corrupt key in the registry.

Please don't start to tinker with the registry, because the smallest mistake can cause a system not to run anymore. The registry is the most important thing of a system and a broken registry is a broken system.
