Besides the winbo32 popup that says DOH, I'm getting IE pop-ups that want me to go online, and my desktop wallpaper is coverd with a WARNING! YOU'RE IN DANGER screen. After many warnings it finishes with the phrase "could broke your life", followed by a removal instructions link.

Prevx warnings: (it was shut down for the HJT run, just runed it back on)
Windows explorer is trying to READ, DELETE the protected file/directory C:\R.EXE
I managed to get rid of pruttct.exe, still see mediapass.exe is the processes

Any assistance will be appreciated by me and my neighbor.
Thanks,
D-braves

Hello Dembraves, Welcome to the Geeks to go Forums. My Name is Jfcap, and I will be helping you clean your system.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions incase you need to boot into safe mode, where your internet will be unavailable.

Lets get started!

Go here and run at least two of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {ED103D9F-3070-4580-AB1E-E5C179C1AE41} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

mmuwm.exe

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\OIUNDLL.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SLWSENC.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\othb.exe

These two files, you need to click START and then SEARCH and then type in the path of these files. Once it locates the files, please delete them using Windows Explorer. You will need to close the search window in order to delete the file.

spiipsec.exe
stikeng.exe

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

After that, Reboot.

Next, please post a fresh HiJackThis log for me to look at.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey, Jfcap!
So far no luck in getting the online virus scans to work. Apparently, I've made the problem worse by starting with the procedure laid out in the forum rules. I did Ad-Aware per the custom settings, then did SpyBot fixes, followed by immunize. Now, IE pop-ups take over the computer right at startup and I can't seem to get the online scan sites to come up and start working before the computer stops responding. I did get Panda going late last night and after about 40000 files, 183 were infected, with about 70 of them disinfected, before iexplorer crashed. Usually, I get a C++ runtime error box wrt wmuwa.exe also.

Before I did the Ad-Aware/Spybot fix, all I had was Prevx warnings and the wallpaper covered by that spyware warning, which is obviously a trick. I could still get online with very few unwanted pop-ups in my way. Now, I get about 30+ pop-up within 5 minutes of startup. I can get this forum site up with the links to the online scans, then can get to the scan's front page, but clickng on the link for the scan start never gets a response.

Can I do anything in safe mode before going to the online scans? Can I go back to a restore point? I'm not sure what kind of virus scan she has on her machine, maybe AOL's online version. Can I install Norton or McAffe locally? She has a Windows Update on deck, but I don't know what it is. Didn't bother to check what it is, because "the book" says that installing windows updates with spyware/viruses running is a no-no.

I'm at work now, will get back to it around 1900hrs Pacific time. I was looking forward to making progress, as I removed it from my neighbor's place and put it on my network so that the glacially slow AOL dialup would be out of the picture for online scans, and now this! :tazz:

Whatcha think?
Thanks,
Dembraves

Dembraves,

Lets skip the online virus scans for now, and continue on with the rest of the fixes. Once you fix all of these, if you can get online, please try and run the virus scans.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

J,
My comments in green throughout. I re-ran Ad-Aware before starting this process, because the pop-ups were making it impossible to do anything, so maybe the HJT recommendations you made are different from what I'm seeing now.
Thanks much,
Curtis

J,
Ran the moosoft cleaner twice.
First scan told me to reboot to allow cleaner to complete removal of:
Apropop
c:\program files\cxtpls\ace.dll
Could not delete file. code 115

So I reboot, run again, one more file deleted, not the same as above.

Here's the HJT log.
Thanks,
CM

Found the fix on Cnet by Googling the last part of the text of the wallpaper hijacker:

1. Goto Control Panel;
2. Select Display;
3. Select Desktop tab;
4. Click on the Customize Desktop button;
5. Select Web tab;
6. Uncheck or delete whatever seems to be suspicious in the WEBPAGE box

I deleted a Security entry and all is well with wallpaper...for now...we'll see.

Anything else I should do? Should I start surfing to see what gives?

Just for grins, gonna try the eTrust web scanner that kept crashing before. Got only a couple/three pop-ups when I went online/did the scan.

Scan results in 59 virus deletions, 5 not deleted:
optimize.exe Win32.Dyfuca.A C:\Program Files\Internet Optimizer
etdarm.exe Win32.Bettlnet.U C:\WINDOWS
nem220dll Win32.Dyfuca.D C:\WINDOWS\system32
Bolger.dll Win32.Bettlnet.R C:\WINDOWS
MediaAccK.exe Win32.WinAd.H C:\Program Files\Media Access

Guess I should have axed Media Access, just like other HJT scans showed Media Pass to be axed.

Ran Ad-Aware again, 153 objects deleted.

Dembraves,

I know you already did AdAware, but follow these directions to run AdAware, and then the VX2 Plugin for AdAaware.

Run Ad-Aware with the latest update.
  • Download the latest version of Ad-Aware (Ad-Aware SE Build 1.05) from here.
  • If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
  • After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
  • Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
  • Once the definitions have been updated:
  • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
    • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
    • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
      • "Automatically save logfile"
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
      • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
    • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
    • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
    • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
    • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
    • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
    • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
    • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
    • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
    • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
    • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
    • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
      • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
      • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
      • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
    • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
      • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
      • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
      • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
    • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
    • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
    • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
    • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
  • Close all programs except ad-aware.
  • Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
  • Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
  • After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
Plug-Ins for Ad-Aware (VX2 Cleaner)
Download the free VX2 Cleaner here
  • Close Ad-Aware SE build 1.05 and Ad-Watch (if running)
  • Install the VX2 Cleaner
  • Start Ad-Aware SE build 1.05
  • Go to “Plug-ins”
  • Select the VX2 Cleaner plug-in and click “Run Plugin”
  • If your computer isn't infected, click "close"
  • If your computer is infected:
  • Select “Clean System”
  • Reboot your computer
  • Scan your computer with Ad-Aware
  • Remove any VX2 objects detected
  • Reboot your computer again
  • Run a second scan to make sure the files have been removed from your computer
Virus warnings while performing a scan with Ad-Aware
While performing a scan with Ad-Aware, a background antivirus monitor may issue an alert, stating that a virus has been found in the temporary directory (%temp%) for the current user. This does not necessarily mean your computer has been infected with an active virus. Most antivirus resident scanners will not scan compressed files and only monitor your memory for the sign of an active viral process.

During a scan, Ad-Aware will temporarily decompress files to scan their contents without activating the content, but in doing so, the file is noticed by the antivirus' resident scanner.

Also, some antivirus applications include an option to quarantine infected files, and when Ad-Aware decompresses these quarantined files, the antivirus background scanner detects the virus moving outside the quarantine area. To avoid this you can either remove the quarantined files via your antivirus application, or have Ad-Aware ignore the antivirus program's quarantine folders/files during a scan.

Once done, please post a New HiJackThis Log.

Thanks

J,
Here it is...VX2 plugin reported "clean". Is this machine in desperate need of a service pack update? I see that there is an update onboard, begging for installation. Now I've got some "CashBack pays you to shop" dog icon in my system tray after Ad-Aware runs....make it stop!
Thanks for the several days of help,
CM

Dembraves,

Sorry for the delay in the responce.

Please run LiveUpdate from windows and upgrade any critical fixes you might need to update, this will prevent your computer from getting reinfected right after we fix the problems.

Then please post a fresh HiJackThis Log.

Thanks

Justin

J,
Do you mean "LiveUpdate" as in Norton AntiVirus or the Windows Update that been sitting there for some time? I was worried about doing a Windows update while the machine was infected as I heard that doing so could make matters worse. I want to be sure that I understand exactly what to do, so I'm going to ask "literal" questions like this, if you don't mind.
Thanks,
CM
