Hello, dear helpers,

Thank you for your patience and help.

My PC has XP(Home). It was infected by Trojan.Alwayup.

I followed the instructions on the board. Here is a list of results:

* Ad-aware SE -- found lots of objects and cleaned them (sorry, I forgot those names)

* CWShredder -- no CW was found

* Spybot S&D -- found a couple of problems and fixed them

* Ewido Security Suite -- found lots of objects, bellow is the report

Hi hyshi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP, or Service Pack 4 if you are running Win2k. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

thanks,

Hi Excal,

Glad to see your reply.

My system is XP home. I have installed SP1a for XP. I also checked the windows update website and it shows only Service Pack 2 should be installed.

I run HiJackThis again. Here is the latest version of HiJackThis log.

Hi hyshi,

Its not showing that you have SP1, could youhave possibly just downloaded it and not installed it?

Thanks,

Hi Excal,

That is strange. I remembered downloading SP1a before my initial post. I used the express install which integrated downloading and installation together. I waited a long time for it to install many components. Also when I go to Windows Update now, it does not show those update components. It only shows "Single installation: Windows XP Service Pack 2".

I wonder if it is possible to download SP1a again. Let me know what I could do.

Thank you,

hyshi

  • Please go here (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer ( not Firefox or any other browser as they won't work)
  • Click on "Windows Validation Assistant"
  • Click on the "Validate Now" button.
  • Be patient while the ActiveX loads, do not click on any links.
  • Read the instructions on this page while it's loading. You will be prompted to install - click YES.
  • Enter your product key then click "continue"
  • When it says "Validation Complete" please click "Continue to return to your previous activity"
  • Copy what it says and paste it here.
Thanks,

Hi Excal, I'm not sure whether I got the right info. But here is the result. -- hyshi

Thank you for running the Windows Validation Assistant. It appears that your Windows Product Key is valid.

This is a strong indicator that your operating system is genuine, however the Windows Validation Assistant cannot make a final determination.

The benefits of genuine Windows software include greater reliability, faster access to updates, and overall richer experiences. Users of genuine Windows are also eligible to receive special offers as part of the Windows Genuine Advantage program.

To verify that you received a genuine Certificate of Authenticity and software CD, compare your anti-piracy features in the next section.

Compare Your Anti-Piracy Features
Select the method by which you acquired Windows and compare the anti-piracy features included with your product with the anti-piracy features included with genuine Microsoft software.

Hi hyshi,

Sorry about the wait

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

Please update your ewido, if oyu haven't already done so :tazz:

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy
Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

Hi Excal,

Thank you for the instructions. I have followed the steps. Here are reports from ActiveScan and Hijackthis.

Hi hyshi,

1) Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

2) Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

3) Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Documents and Settings\ownerxxx\Start Menu\Programs\AdDestroyer
C:\Documents and Settings\ownerxxx\Favorites\Casino & Carrers
C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar

4) Once in Safe Mode,
8. Please run Killbox.
  • Select "Delete on Reboot".
  • Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QBUninstaller.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dxtvbox.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gl2frame.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\glsrch32.dll

    E:\files\lab1\movie on lab\netants.zip[setup.exe][IPCCLIENT.DLL]
    E:\files\lab1\movie on lab\netants.zip[setup.exe][TFDE.DLL]

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..

Hi Excal,

Thank you for your fast response. I will be on a trip for one day. After I come back (maybe on friday), I will perform those operations.

Now the system is mostly okay, I think. Thank you so much.

Take care,

hyshi

Hi Excal,

Thank you for waiting. I've finished those steps you posted last time. Now the system looks okay. Just Spybot always report about the registry changes by HiJackThis program. I allowed those changes, but it still keep coming out. I guess maybe after I cleaned the system, I can install that program.

Here is the latest HijackThis log, in case you want to check.

You may want to try and clean your registry out:
  • Please dowload: RegSeeker.
  • Click on "Clean The Registry" in the left panel.
  • Check all boxes (make sure the backup box in the lower left corner is selected!).
  • After it runs, click "Select All" on the bottom, then right-click on any selected item in the window and select "Delete Selected Items".
  • Click "Quit RegSeeker".
Now, open any of your installed programs, and make sure that everything opens ok. If so, reboot, then go back and run the RegSeeker again, do the same thing again if anything is found. When RegSeeker finds nothing else, then it's clean!

Hi, Excal,

I wonder if I can install SP2 for XP now. Since I found RegSeeker got some entry related to programs I'm using, I don't want to clean those registry entries. Let me know your suggestion.

Thanks again,
