Smitfraud - Trojan desktop hijack - Antivir-gold [RESOLVED]

My name is Justin, and I will be helping you clean up your system. lets get started!

You are running HijackThis from the Desktop; please create a new folder for it and move the program into the new folder


Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Now open Ewido Security Suite

• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save Report
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

I feel like I got some new independence this Independence Day!! I did everything you suggested and I have my desktop back!! Here's what I found.

I scanned with Hijack This and did not find the two items that you said to put a checkmark next to.
I ran smitrem and noticed as the files quickly went by a lot of things that couldn't be found.
I ran Ewido ( In my haste, I started to run it before I rebooted in safe mode, but I stopped and restarted the computer.)
I had trouble running Panda and had to reboot into normal mode a second time. It still showed some viruses around.

Im glad to see that things are getting better. Dont worry about smitrem not finding some of the files, because SmitRem takes care of 3 of the desktop hijacks that we see the most, so it just means that you didnt have all of the infections, which is very good.

Onto the rest of the fix!

Part 1 - Downloads

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Part 2 - L2MFIX Scan 1

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Part 2 - HiJackThis Fix

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Part 4 - Safemode

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

PSGuard

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\PSGuard



Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

After that, Reboot.

Part 5 - Post Logs

Next, please post the log from L2MFix, and a new HiJackThis log in your reply.

I've done the latest and here are the logs. FYI, CWShredder found nothing and PSGuard was aleady uninstalled. Also, when I turn Norton back on again, it still comes up with the message about being infected with DesktopHijack.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Glad to hear that things are looking cleaner. But Norton still pops up and tells me I have Desktophijacker. I can "click OK' about 4 times and at least the box goes away now for a couple of minutes. Then it's back again. I rebooted in the hopes that it was just something lingering, but that didn't help. Then I did a Panda Scan and it found stuff also. Guess I'm not totally clean yet. Here is the log from that scan.

I did run it with autoclean, but to be sure, I ran it again. Here's the log. I'm still getting the message from Norton about desktophijack. Also, when I go online, I never sign on to my home page. I always get a message that it can't find the server.

Hello!

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder


Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

If the program does not find anything in Safemode, boot to normal windows and run the program again.

I ran CW Shredder in both safe and regular mode and it didn't find anything. I also did a virus scan with Trend Micro and it didn't find anything. But Norton keeps telling me I have DesktopHijack. This is driving me crazy!!
