Hi, i've been reading a lotta posts regarding the removal of my Winfixer problem. I've never used a forum before.... and i'm hoping some genius will respond to me. I think i contracted this problem when i opened up this evil Email that i thought was legit. Anyhow, so far i've scanned with Kaspersky, Ewido, Spybot, Escan, Mcafee, Avast, CureIt, and TrendMicro's online scanner.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Here's my Hijackthis log:

Hi Dying Computer, welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

*We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time. DO NOT UPGRADE TO SP2 AT THIS TIME

*Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log

Regards,

Trevuren

Trevuren, I appreciate the response. Beneath is the updated Hijackthis log after installing SP1. I didn't have my Win XP pro CD on hand, and it said system stability would be compromised if i didn't replace the new files with original files from the CD. Is there any validity to this? If so, how could i go about replacing the unstable files with original files?

Thanks,

Brian

1. Did they mention what files were missing?

2. If not you have 2 options
  • Wait until you can find your Windows CD
  • Procedd with fix and hope that your system is stable enough for the fix.
3. Your choice (I have never heard of this message before.)

It didn't say what files were required. I bet i could go about killing this Winfixer problem cuz the system is still rock solid. As for the unstable files, i think i could just reapply the SP1 patch, and get the original files in place, after we fix the Winfixer prob. So... what should i do next to fix the Winfixer popups??

Thanks,

Brian

1. UNINSTALL one of the 2 AntiVirus programs that you are running. They have a tendancy to conflict with each other and at times favor infection because they are hampering the other;s endeavours.

2. 1. Download CWShredder

If you are using anything other than Windows xp you may need a zip program.
Please download the evaluation version of
Winzip.

2. Download SpSeHjfix.zip to the desktop.
  • Then right click on the desktop and select new >folder, name it spfix
  • Unzip SpSeHjfix.zip into the new folder.
3. Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
  • Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
  • When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
  • The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.
If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

4. Once it is finished, run CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

5. Reboot and post a new HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

Alritey, i performed the SpSeHjfix.zip thing and it pretty much did nothing. The CWShredder identified some Look2me and some other virus that i also already killed earlier today. Here's the SpSeHjfix report: ---I scanned it twice, so it may look a little funny

Malicious .DLL file(s) has/have disrupted the LSP chain on your computer. This can be seen by the (010) entry(ies) in your HJT log. We must fix this problem as a priority.

1. Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type ‘regedit’ without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP.

2. Download the LSPfix.txt and read the readme file.

3. Download LSPfix.zip or LSPfix.exe

4. Close all windows except LSPfix

5. Launch LSPfix.zip and install to its own folder, then click on LSPfix.exe. Or click on LSPfix.exe and it will launch the program.

6. Put a check mark in the box “I know what I am doing

7. Click ‘Finish

7. REBOOT to complete the task.

8. Now RUN HJT, click Scan and POST a new log file in this thread using “Add Reply”.

Trevuren

Okay, i ran the LSPfix, and it did fix the problem, sorta. Immediately after i ran it, i Hijackthis scanned it, and it showed that the problem you stated was fixed. After i rebooted and HiJackThis scanned it, the problem showed up again. I've done this in a couple different ways, and have found that rebooting regenerates the LSP problem. So, here's the HiJackThis log after a reboot, as requested:

1. You are still running 2 AVs on your system. PLease remove one for it is one of the major causes of instability.

2. REBOOT

3. You have the latest version of VX2.
  • Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

  • Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
  • Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then OPEN the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #"1" for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter.
  • This will scan your computer and it may appear as if nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log.
  • Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Regards,

Trevuren

Okay, i ran option 1 of the L2mfix. Beneath are the results. When i ran the .bat file MS-DOS didn't especially like running the program and i opted to "ignore" a couple of errors.

Thanks,

Brian

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
  • From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing "2" and then pressing ENTER.
  • Then press any key to reboot your computer.
  • After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer.
  • When it's finished, Notepad will open with a log.
  • Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Regards,

Trevuren

  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://g.msn.com/0SEENUS/SAOS10
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.
Regards,

Trevuren

Ok, here's the latest HiJackThis log. I'm not entirely sure what we've done so far, but amazingly this Winfixer prob is gone!! Just curiously, would it be safe to use HiJackThis and "fix" the entries regarding Trendmicro and Mcafee? I've uninstalled both.

You guys are amazing!! :tazz: Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian
