Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, then also from system tools, run disc defragmenter

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm then reboot.

Download, install and run
Tune Up 2006 Trial

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

If no change, consider backing up any data you need to keep, then use boot and nuke to comprehensively wipe the drive

http://dban.sourceforge.net/

Use the autorun, or one which has 3 or more passes, which will take an hour per 25GB of drive size

Re-install XP using the default NTFS format, not quick, and check it is creating a RAW1 partition on C, if it is any different, press the reset button to restart set up

Tried to Defrag, but it froze up on me while trying to move a file called V_BOS or something similar.. system then crashed again into a re-boot, with the following serious error message after start-up:

Error signature:
BCCode : 1000008e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : 8062A2A5 BCP3 : EEA8CBF0
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

Files included in error report:
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERffe6.dir00\Mini031306-02.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERffe6.dir00\sysdata.xml

it then opened up a brower to this link:
http://oca.microsoft...5cd2402a&SID=10

---
That being said, I guess I'll go on with the other steps since I've tried to defrag a few times now, with crashes as the result..

Things are running slightly better, but now my Panda Antivirus wont update... it DLs the update, but doesn't aply it.

That, and simple tiny programs like HJSplit [file splitter] cause the system to freeze, forcing a manual reboot.

Please don't tell me I have to re-install windows for the 18th time in a few weeks.
